BRUCE JR. CHARGES FROM 18th TO 7th AT EAGLE NATIONALS

– EAGLE, Neb. (June 13) – It was at some point between crossing under the checkered flag and signing autographs that Tony Bruce Jr. let out a sigh of relief.

He relaxed his shoulders and could finally breathe a little easier after wrapping up double duty on Saturday at the Eagle Nationals at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., where his business – TBJ Promotions – put on the ASCS National Tour event.

“Doubling as the event promoter and race car driver, I gotta give credit to my crew, family and everyone who helps us with TBJ Promotions because it lets me get in the race car and drive when I need to,” Bruce Jr. said.

And that’s exactly what he did despite another high pill draw and arguably the most stacked heat race in an ASCS National Tour race this season.

After drawing a 70, which was the second highest, the Liberal, Kan., native was forced to start last – ninth – in a heat race featuring Wayne Johnson, Gary Wright, Tim Crawley and Jason Johnson, who have a collective total of 10 ASCS National championships. Oh, and veteran Danny Wood and fellow ASCS National driver Dustin Morgan was also in the 10-lap race.

“That was probably one of the toughest heat races I’ve seen all year long,” said Bruce Jr., who finished sixth.

He started third in one of the two B Mains, but quickly worked his way into the lead. Bruce Jr. then drove away from the field and captured the victory to advance to the prestigious feature, where he started 18th on the dry track.

It didn’t take long for him to move forward in that race either. Bruce Jr. was up to 12th within the first five laps. By lap 10, he’d climbed into the top 10. When he crossed the stripe for the final time, Bruce Jr. finished seventh – his best ASCS National Tour result of the season.

“Every race we were in we went forward and that’s all you can ask for,” he said. “All in all, for as bad as the night started, we finished well and that’s a testament to the progress we’ve made this season.”

It also moved him up to eighth in the ASCS National Tour standings.

Bruce Jr. will head to Mesquite, Texas, for a doubleheader this weekend at Devil’s Bowl Speedway with the ASCS Lone Star and Sooner Regions on Friday and Saturday.
