World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at a Glance…Knoxville

From Kyle Ludders

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Aug. 8, 2011 — For the past 51 years the small community of Knoxville, Iowa, is transformed into the Mecca of Sprint Car racing for a few weeks in August. It’s the most prestigious, richest and toughest race to win — the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals. Drivers and teams from around the world converge on the Midwestern town to claim Sprint Car immortality. The winners list is a who’s who of the most famous drivers and teams in the sport. Names like Kinser, Opperman, Wolfgang, Swindell, Lasoski, Schatz and more echo the hallowed grounds of the half-mile, black gumbo oval. Careers have been made or broken in the feature event. Heroes and spoilers emerge. By Saturday night, a new chapter will be written. Will it be a first-time winner or a former champion standing in Victory Lane? The countdown is on.
