Tulsa, OK – (January 16, 2016) – Rico Abreu picked up his second consecutive victory at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire Saturday night at the Tulsa Expo Raceway. The Rutherford, California driver took the lead from Bryan Clauson following a restart with 15 laps to go and held off a last lap effort by Clauson to retake the lead for his second Golden Driller trophy.

For Abreu the victory capped of a banner week where he won his preliminary feature and announced a full time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series effort for 2016.

“Hats off to (Keith Kunz and Pete Willoughby) they are the best in the business, the best car owners anyone could drive for. Safelite Auto Glass, Toyota, Keith Kunz, Pete Willoughby. It’s phenomenal to race with them,” said Abreu in victory lane. “It’s another moment you cherish, it’s so cool win this race two years in a row. That doesn’t happen too often.”

Clauson and Bell started on the front row for the 55-lap feature event racing side by side until Bell took the lead through turns three and four. Clauson, Alex Bright, and Rico Abreu fell in line on the bottom of the track through the early stages.

Clauson began to put the pressure on Bell on lap nine as they started to catch the back of the field. Then on lap 11 the race took a dramatic turn when C.J. Leary lost power in front of Bell with Bell ended up backwards on the berm in turn three, handing the lead to Clauson. Bell was able to restart at the tail end of the field.

Clauson pulled away during the restart with Bright in tow. Abreu and Tim McCreadie raced side by side with third taking away the positon off turn two on lap 12. One lap later McCreadie lost that spot to Zach Daum as Abreu bicycled behind them in turn two, but brought the car down and was able to continue.

Clauson entered heavy traffic on lap 20, cutting through the slower cars as Daum worked around Bright for second. Daum started to close in on Clauson on lap 25 working the top of the track while Clauson worked the bottom.

The caution appeared again while working lap 28 when Justin Grant tipped over in turn three. Grant climbed out of the car under his own power, but had to retire from the event due to heavy front end damage on his car.

Clauson had a lapped car between himself and Daum for the restart. Daum cleared the car, but not before Clauson opened up a three car length lead. Lap 32 saw Abreu, McCreadie, and Bright racing for third with Abreu taking the spot and McCreadie following him through.

Then on lap 36 Bright ended up upside down on the backstretch to bring out the caution flag. Bright was able to restart at the tail of the field.

Daum was able to restart right behind Clauson as Abreu worked the top to close on Daum with Jerry Coons, Jr. in tow up to fourth around McCreadie. Abreu started to pressure Daum for second on lap 38, but Daum was able to hold off the challenge. Daum and Abreu exchanged slide jobs with Daum holding the spot and pulling away.

The caution reappeared on lap 40 when Damion Gardner got sideways trying to avoid Thomas Meseraull sideways in turn four and collected Sammy Swindell. Both drivers were able to restart at the tail of the field.

Daum tried to get a look under Clauson into turn one, but could not make the pass in turns one and two. Abreu capitalized on it throwing a slide job in three and four to take second away from Daum. One lap later caution flag appeared again eventually turning into a red flag for a medical emergency in the grandstands.

Abreu began to put pressure on Clauson in turns one and two on lap 42, but hit the infield berm and ended up on two wheels, allowing Clauson to open up some distance. The caution appeared again when Sammy Swindell and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. tangled in turn three on lap 44. Both drivers restarted at the tail of the field.

For Abreu the caution setup his drive to victory.

“I just knew I needed to get going. It was time,” said Abreu. “We had that caution and Keith (Kunz) told me to get going. It was time to go and I tried not to make mistakes there at the end.”

Abreu started to put pressure on Clauson after the restart and got run under Clauson one on lap 45 and took the lead through turns three and four. Abreu pulled away as Daum began to close on Clauson for second. Meanwhile Abreu pulled away from the rest of the field.

As the white flag came out Clauson closed in on Abreu, but hit the cushion too hard in turn two and allowed Abreu to get away for the victory. Clauson held on for the runner up spot with Zach Daum, Jerry Coons, Jr., and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five.
