Brisbane, AU — Robbie Farr has won a spectacular opening round of World Series Sprintcars at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway tonight. Steven Lines and Cameron Gessner rounded out the podium.
Despite setting a quick time at the start of the night, Farr did it the hard way. After starting out of the second row, last year’s series runner-up wrestled with an ill-handling car and survived several challenges for the lead in the 30-lap final.
One of those challenges resulted in challenger James McFadden having his front-end wiped out as he put it all on the line in a do-or-die high line move.
Farr was the quickest of the 33 cars to run against the clock at the start of the night, setting the benchmark at 11.809 seconds, just ahead of American Tyler Walker and David Murcott. Murcott endured heartbreak after crashing out in the first lap of the feature race after starting from pole position.
Farr’s East Coast Pipelines team then had had their work cut out for them after the car was damaging in the first heat.
“The night we had, you wouldn’t believe,” Farr said.
The front of the car was shortened by as much as four inches in the first heat when Farr spun the car several times as he crossed the finish line.
“I didn’t win the race, the boys did. The team did.
“We just fought our way through the night.”
Farr admitted they would have settled for a top five given the front-end damage.
“To come out with a win, I just didn’t expect it.”
Lines was impressive in his debut for Monte Motorsport.
“We had a plan to come here and roll around and do the best we can,” Lines said.
“I just wanted to finish.
“Farr obviously gets the job done, he is a tough competitor, but I can’t thank my team enough.
“Hopefully Luch had a good night over in the west, it’s been a hell of a deal and hopefully we can go forward from here.”
Gessner was happy with the result but said he would have liked the win.
“We wanted to win that one,” Gessner said.
The start of the feature race was marred by the crash that took polesitter Murcott out in the first corner after coming together with Lines.
Farr was the early leader on the next start from Lines and Gessner.
With 17 laps to go Farr and Lines started lapping cars including Trevor Green.
Walker was using the high line to good effect but his charge ended when he withdrew with a flat left rear tyre. At the same time Ian Loudon surrendered a good spot and brought on the caution lights.
On the restart McFadden was on a mission, charging from fourth to second as he chased the high line to round up Farr.
He ran out of racing room and wrecked the A1 in spectacular fashion, limping to the infield and producing another yellow flag.
Farr said it was a tough deal, noting there were no rear vision mirrors on Sprintcars.
“I hate to see that happen, he could see what I was doing, I couldn’t see what he was doing,” Farr said.
Former contracted series driver Peter Lack won the B Main from Andrew Wright, contracted driver Trevor Green, super sub American Jason Sides, Andrew Scheuerle and Peter Thorley, seeing them all progress to the back of the pack for the A Main.
Local track hero Peter Thorley had the honour of being the first heat winner of the new series, crossing the line ahead of Richard Morgan and Andrew Wright. Reidy, who timed in 26th in qualifying, won both of his heat races while other heat winners were Brent Krantzmann, Sides and Marty Perovich.
