Inside Line Promotions
LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (May 14, 2013) – Surfing has Hurley. Motocross has Fox. Sprint car racing has, well, no leader in apparel.
Austen Wheatley’s dream is to change that. Enter Downforce Designs, which is the young racer’s apparel company that has taken off in its inaugural season. While the business started as a custom apparel company within the racing industry, Wheatley’s goal is to transcend that into a successful clothing line.
“Overall, I would like it to be strictly a clothing line that is solely focused on Downforce clothing,” he said. “I’d like to morph DFD into something that promotes the sport as a whole through merchandise, photos, videos and more.”
With that, he envisions a handful of “house” drivers from a variety of dirt racing series that will be sponsored by Downforce Designs.
What started as an idea last fall has rocketed into a full-blown business as Downforce Designs is now located in a 4,000-square-foot building. It features a 10-color, 12-station, fully-automatic textile printer to produce apparel at a rapid rate. In fact, business has been so good that he’s had to put off focusing on the Downforce Designs brand.
“I want to do the Downforce stuff, but I’ve been so busy with the clients that DFD has been put on the shelf,” he said. “The support has been tremendous for it.”
The company has started off with World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series driver Chad Kemenah on board along with Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour racer Seth Bergman, J.J. Hickle and a host of others as it continues to evolve.
“I’m a pretty young kid, so I think things have evolved into something totally different into what they were,” Wheatley said of the apparel industry. “My goal is to keep the new edge, the new visions and just be cutting edge.”
