SUNNYVALE, Texas (Feb. 5, 2014) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. has been greeted with sun after a long haul to Florida this week.

“It’s really nice down here,” he said. “I think it’s about 75 degrees.”

While the rest of the country is jealous of the weather conditions, this marks a business trip for Hafertepe Jr., who opens the winged sprint car portion of his season this Thursday through Saturday at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala for the 3rd annual Bubba Army Winter Nationals with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions.

Hafertepe Jr. said he will use this weekend as a competitive test session heading into the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season-opening event next week.

“Most guys come to Ocala as a test session,” he said. “That’s kinda what we’re doing with the intent to win. Two years ago we ran like third and fourth a handful of nights there. The track is pretty unpredictable. One year it’s really slick and the next it’s really heavy.”

As unique as the surface is the shape of the track.

“It’s got a really odd shape and the surface is real sandy,” he said. “As far as dirt track racing goes, you’re on one end of the spectrum. You’ve got a hairpin in turns three and four and turns one and two is a sweeping corner.”

Hafertepe Jr. said his main objective is to dial in his engines before finding comfort in the race car.

“Basically, the main thing is to make sure your engines are running really well,” he said. “The air is good down here. The second thing is getting a good handle on the car and making sure you feel comfortable. This weekend obviously we want to be competitive and win the races. But first and foremost, we want to make sure we have a good handle on our car and our engines run well.”
