COLLARD CASHES IN AT NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS

by Tommy Goudge,Peter Anderson photo

(August 19, 2011) – Jamie Collard had a flair for the dramatic on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway. The Burford, Ontario driver led only the last 2 laps of the Northern Summer Nationals series feature to visit the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle for the first time. Jim Lampman triumphed in the Lighthouse Tattoos Thunder Stocks, Trevor Goulding claimed HRW Automotive Mini Stock honours, and Jesse McDonald got the Pierced Parts Bombers win.

NORTHERN SUMMER NATIONALS SPRINT CAR SERIES
Steve Collins and Brad Knab were given front row starting spots in the “outlaw style” redraw, and Collins led the first 2 laps before 8th starter Kyle Moffit took over at the front. Dustin Daggett started 7th on the grid, but he was already in 2nd by lap 5 and began to chase Moffit down. Moffit went high in turn 1 on lap 9 and Daggett took advantage, but then caught a rut, got sideways, and collected Moffit. Kyle’s night was done, while Daggett restarted at the tail end of the field.

Travis Cunningham took over at the front, but his lead was short-lived as Bryan Howland got by on lap 10. Jamie Collard started 21st after qualifying from the B-Main, but he made his way to 10th by lap 11, and wasn’t done there. He was 5th by lap 15, and into 2nd chasing Howland down by lap 17. He tried going to the outside exiting turn 2, but couldn’t complete the pass. He fell back, but got another chance when a caution flag flew for Dain Naida on lap 22. Collard made the winning pass with 2 laps to go, and went on to claim the $2,000 prize.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a lot of years,” said Jamie. “I’ve been running here 7 or 8 years now, and never got a win. I was running that line in the B-Main and it seemed to be real fast. I was gaining a lot of spots, and I gained a lot of ground on Bryan. I was just waiting for the right time to get in beside him and show him I was there.”

Jamie thought his race was over when he got sideways in turn 4 with 5 laps left to run.

“I thought I cut another tire down. It started shaking real bad. I think the rim is full of mud or something. I was really worried I cut a tire like I did in the heat (race).”

Heat races for the 40 car field went to Steve Goldner, Dustin Daggett, Kyle Moffit, and Steve Collins, while Kyle Patrick won the B-Main, and Brett Mann won the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance “Top Gun” award for topping the heat race passing points list.

LIGHTHOUSE TATTOOS THUNDER STOCKS
Jim Lampman started 3rd in the Thunder Stock feature, but he quickly made his way to the front and led all the way in the non-stop affair. Cory Turner delivered another strong run, racing from 11th to 2nd, while points leader Mike Thorne drove from 16th to 3rd, and Lee Winger went from 12th to 4th. Mike Miller held on for a top 5 finish.

“It’s finally all coming together,” said Jim after the race. “There’s a lot of people who have watched us run back in the pack all year. Last Saturday night at Merrittville we pulled off a feature win with the old motor, and this one we just finished putting in at 4:00 this afternoon.”

Heat races for the 20 car field went to Lampman and Winger.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS
Trevor Goulding made a rare appearance at Ohsweken, and sliced through the field from 18th to claim the feature win. It was just his 3rd race of the season at Ohsweken after claiming the 2010 track championship. Chase Hess, Lee Hils, John Cote, and Abel Castelein rounded out the top 5. Castelein’s run helped him make a big gain in the points standings as both Karl Sault and Mike Evers had problems and did not finish. Jeremy Hughes also stood to make some gains in the championship chase, but dropped out of the top 5 with a flat tire late in the race.

“This car seems to love this track,” said Goulding from the Engine Pro Racing Winner’s Circle. “I don’t know why, but this car belongs here. Word came down that it was pretty rutty out here, and I was like ‘Cool, I like rutty tracks!’, so it was fun.”

Heat races for the 28 car field went to Chase Hess, Lee Hils, and Jeremy Hughes.

PIERCED PARTS BOMBERS
Jesse McDonald drove through the pack to get to the lead, then survived some accidental contact from Brady Longboat to hold on for his 4th feature win of the season. Rodney Rutherford settled for 2nd, followed by Longboat, Sarah Rutherford, and Dusty DeBoer.

“I was just steering and hoping it was going to stick,” said Jesse. “I was hoping nobody was going to get by me. It was a good race. The track’s a little rough, but it was fun.”

Heat races for the 15 car field went to Longboat and McDonald.
