FRESNO, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2014) – Dominic Scelzi has ambitious goals for the 2014 season, which kicks off in a little more than two weeks.
Scelzi, who has formed an alliance with Roth Motorsports, will be a full-time chaser of the King of the West Sprint Car Series championship for the first time.
“That’s what we’re shooting for,” he said. “To put my name next to the names of the previous drivers to win championships would mean a lot to me. To put my name up with Tim Kaeding, Brent Kaeding, Kyle Larson, Jonathan Allard and all those drivers would mean the world to me. I know it’s a really high hope, but I feel like it’s possible with the help we have and the equipment we have.”
In limited action last year, Scelzi finish ninth in the championship points and garnered the Rookie of the Year Award. He has a plan to improve on those results and put himself in contention for a championship run.
“I like to feel like I’m a smart racer,” he said. “If I can qualify in the top 10 every race and transfer to get in the dash and run top five in every single event, I feel it’d be really hard to not win the championship. If I can keep myself from having an off night we can have a really good shot at winning the championship.”
In addition to the King of the West races, Scelzi will compete in 13 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series events – including his season opener, which is March 5-6 at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nev.
“I’m really, really excited to be able to face off against the Outlaws,” he said. “I’d really like to knock off a couple of top 10s. My goal would be to make every A Main with the Outlaws.”
Outside of the King of the West and World of Outlaws events, Scelzi will focus on marquee 360ci races throughout California.
“We’re not going to run any 410 races other than King of the West and the Outlaws,” he said. “Basically we’ve got only big races on the 360 schedule. It seems like we’ve been fast every time we’ve run a 360. My goal for the 360 program is to run top five every race and at Trophy Cup put ourselves in a position where we can be close in points heading into the Saturday night race.”
