Somerton, AZ — (March 4, 2014) — Seth Bergman classified his season-opening weekend as average.
“We didn’t do anything to awe anybody, but we didn’t have a bad weekend,” he said. “We didn’t make a big splash, but it wasn’t anything to be too disappointed with.”
Bergman is ranked 10th in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings after the season opener on Friday and Saturday at Cocopah Speedway for Rounds 1 and 2 of the Cocopah Cup Challenge.
“We came out of there in the top 10 to stay in the tow money,” he said. “We will just continue to work on the race car and get it right. I think we were pretty close to being really good all weekend. It was a tough field of cars.”
Bergman opened the weekend on Friday by finishing second in his heat race, which earned him enough points to advance into the main event. After starting 11 th, Bergman worked toward the top five in the opening laps.
“I got a few spots at the beginning and then I made a mistake and got out of the good part of the race track and lost three or four spots,” he said. “Then the rubber came. I think we were pretty close to the same as everyone in the top 10, but we weren’t good enough to drive by them all.”
Bergman ended with an 11th-place result.
A rain storm delayed Saturday’s program for approximately three hours and once racing resumed on the 3/8-mile track, Bergman advanced from third to second place in his heat race. That started him 14th in the 30-lap feature.
“We took some notes from Friday night and tried to find an area to improve in,” he said. “I think the few adjustments that we made helped us advance on Saturday.”
On an ultra-fast track, Bergman rallied to score a 10th-place finish.
“Saturday was definitely a better night for us,” he said. “It’s not where I want to be. We really want to go out and win a championship and running 10 th won’t do that for you. We’re just going to keep working toward putting this thing in the winner’s circle.”
Bergman will take this weekend off before heading to Texas with the ASCS Gulf South Region on March 14 at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont and on March 15 at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown.
