Victory Moves Atkinson One Step Closer

Although the Sydney Speedway Sprintcar Track Championship has not been his prime focus all season; Ben Atkinson’s fourth feature race victory of the 2010/11 season over the weekend at Sydney Speedway has moved him one step closer to clinching the overall point standings honours.

Apart from strengthening his lead in the overall Sydney Speedway Track Championship point standings; Atkinson also created history by becoming the winner of the 700th Sprintcar feature race at the Sydney Speedway track on the night.

“In the past weekend’s we’ve been struggling with our setups in the feature races, but it was great to have everything come together on the night and return to victory lane,” commented Atkinson. “Leading up to the weekend we had a productive team meeting where we discussed what we needed to improve on, so we all took a fresh approach into the race meeting and after that we had a really strong feeling of having a good night.”

Atkinson, who had finished second and third in his two heat races, was the second highest point scorer heading into the feature race and therefore started from position nine in the field, worked his way into second place quickly and then in the latter stages fought his way to the front after he had got by leader Damian Abbott and from there he went onto the take out his first feature race win since early February.

“There were a number of restarts in the closing stages and I had to fight pretty hard and get the elbows up in order to move to the front,” said the NSW # 2 Pick ‘N Payless supported J&J driver. “It was a great feeling to get back into the winner’s circle for the whole team and we’re now looking forward to next weekend’s final round of the Sydney Speedway Track Championship.”

This Saturday night’s (April 16) final round of the Sydney Speedway Track Championship sees Atkinson hold down a solid lead in the point standings and he’d love nothing more than to wrap up the point standings on a successful note.

Atkinson would like to thank Garry Rush, John Barrett and Tim Gleeson for all their support, along with sponsors: Pick ‘N Payless, Rush Auto Parts, Castrol Oil, PASS Powdercoating & Sandblasting, and Hydrokleen.
