(Las Cruces, NM – July 23, 2011) The skies over the Southern New Mexico Speedway showed blue but that was not the case anywhere else your compass pointed as heavy downpours surrounded the 5/16 mile oval just west of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Even with the threat of a downpour, the Renegade Sprint Car Series rolled the racing surface smooth as the Rick’s Performance Center Street Stocks, Legends, and MSD Ignition Limited X-Mods sat waiting for their turn to hit the track.
The Renegade Sprint Car Series rolled to life for thirty laps of action with the fight of the lead going three wide from the drop of the green as the 18 of Lorne Wofford shot to the top spot but the fate would see the 18 have to do it again as the red flag waved for the flipped 19 of Wes Wofford. To the complete restart, Lorne Wofford would do it again; going three wide to show the way. As the 18 set sail, the runner up spot would be held by the 2 of Tyler Jackson as the fight for fourth went to the 27 of Cesar Fuentes with the 9 of Robert Herrera trying to make his presence known. Makin the pass for third, the 27 would work on running down the 2 of Jackson as fourth place Lamar Skarda would nearly spun, bunching up fifth through seventh to allow the 8 of John Carney II to streak by into the top five. With a huge advantage on the running order, the 18 of Wofford would now have to contend with slower traffic but a caution for Curt Barnett would bring the field into the Delaware Double File Restart with twenty one laps to run. Taking second on the restart, the 8 of Carney would now have to run down the 18 of Wofford as the 131 of Royal Jones worked on Jackson for third. Taking the spot, the 131 would work every line possible to try and run down Carney as the 8 worked on keeping pace with Wofford. Back into lapped traffic, the 18 would get held up; allowing Carney to close in but a caution would allow Wofford another shot with clear track. To the restart, the 1m of Dylan Harris danced a fine line, nearly getting charged with a Texas Start as the fight for the lead took off again but the red was looming as the 2 of Tyler Jackson slammed into the retaining wall with incredible force. Able to walk away, the field lined up for the restart with eight laps to run with Wofford again taking off to a huge advantage as the battle on the track was for fifth with the 1m of Dylan Harris getting the pass on the 9 of Herrera and the 77 of Colt Treharn as the 131 of Royal Jones overshot the high line while running third. Into the final lap of action, the 8 of Carney worked the bottom of the track as the top groove almost bit the 18 of Wofford. Into turns three and four, the 18 of Wofford would nearly jump the cushion, allowing Carney to pull even with the 18 for a drag race to the checkered flag that saw Lorne Wofford winning by just a few feet at the line. John Carney II, Cesar Fuentes, Dylan Harris, and Robert Herrera rounded out the top five.
