TULSA, Okla. (September 19, 2011) – Just a little over two weeks ago, Stevie Sussex pulled off an unprecedented feat in Sunoco Fuel ASCS Canyon Region competition by reeling off three main event wins over the course of just two nights.
Sussex will try to carry that momentum into this Saturday night’s action as the wingless Sprint Cars of the ASCS Canyon Region take to Peoria, Arizona’s semi-banked, 3/8-mile Canyon Speedway Park clay oval.
Sussex captured his first career ASCS Canyon Region win on September 3 at USA Raceway as he became the fourth different series winner of the year and then tacked on two more the next night, including a makeup feature, for good measure.
With three triumphs, Sussex now matches R.J. Johnson in the win column as only points leader Jeremy Sherman has enjoyed more victory lane champagne with five triumphs. Josh Pelkey topped the series other two feature events thus far in 2011.
With his five wins and no finish worse than fourth in 13 feature events, Sherman holds a 94-point lead over two-time and defending champion Charles Davis, Jr. Sherman is seeking a third ASCS Canyon Region title after taking the top spot in both 2007 and 2008.
Davis, Jr., still looking for his first win of the season after collecting 20 ASCS Canyon Region wins over the past four seasons, still remains within striking distance of Sherman and holds a sturdy advantage over third-ranked R.J. Johnson.
Johnson holds a 40-point advantage over Andrew Reinbold in the fight for third, with Ronnie Clark another 40 points back in fifth. The balance of the current top ten in points includes Bruce St. James, Mike Martin, Josh Pelkey, Ryan Linder and Brian Hosford, with Justin Quinn just one point outside the top ten in 11th.
Saturday’s action marks the first ASCS Canyon card at CSP since June 11, when R.J. Johnson collected his most recent wingless win after Jeremy Sherman topped the initial three Canyon Region events of the season at CSP.
Saturday’s racing action at Canyon Speedway Park goes green at 7:30 p.m.
Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park is located 25 miles north of Phoenix on I-17 to Exit 223, then 6.3 miles west. For more information, contact the track at 602-258-7223.
