Selinsgrove, PA — (August 25, 2012) — Pat Cannon of Etters made a daring lap-10 pass in turn two and went on to win his sixth race of the season at Selinsgrove Speedway in Saturday night’s 25-lap 358 sprint car feature.
The $1,500 victory marked the 38th of Cannon’s career at Selinsgrove driving the Highlands’ Tire & Service Center No. 3.
A war on wheels unfolded between three drivers for the win in the 25-lap late model feature in which Matt Cochran of Williamsport came away with his second career victory at the track.
Shaun Miller of Tower City won his first race of the season in the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Bob Bussey of Northumberland scored his eighth win of the year in the 12-lap roadrunner race.
Selinsgrove Speedway will be in action Sunday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. with the first-ever appearance by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Ticket sales will start at 4 p.m. and track gates will open at 5 p.m.
The track will present the 12th Annual Mach 1 Chassis National Open for 358-360 sprint cars at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, paying $8,000 to win out of a $36,000-plus purse. Joining the sprint cars on the racing card will be the pro stocks.
In the sprint car feature, polesitter Scott Wilson powered into the early lead and was chased by third-place starter Nyle Berkes. On the fifth lap, fifth-place starter Matt Horst challenged Berkes for the runner-up position. However, 11th-place starter Pat Cannon stormed into second and set his sights on the leader.
On the 10th circuit, Cannon took the lead from Wilson with an outside pass exiting turn two. Once in front of the pack, Cannon began to streak away from the field, leaving behind a torrid battle for the runner-up position between sixth-place starter Phil Walter, eighth-place starter Cody Keller, and 16th-place starter TJ Stutts.
At the halfway point, Cannon had a straightaway lead over Walter. On the 21st circuit, a three-wide battle unfolded for second between Walter, Stutts, and 12th-place starter Mark Smith. With three laps remaining, Stutts, who made an engine change following his heat race, raced by Walter for second. At the finish, Cannon posted a one-second victory over Stutts, Walter, Smith, and Keller.
Polesitter Chris Shuey led the first four laps of the late model feature until fourth-place starter Matt Cochran made the winning pass using the outside lane off turn two on a lap five restart. On the fifth circuit, second-place starter Chad Davis reclaimed the runner up position as ninth-place starter Jeff Rine moved into third.
At the halfway point, the top three drivers were locked in a wheel-to-wheel battle for the rest of the distance. Cochran ran the high-line and on several occasions made contact with the guardrail while Davis tried repeatedly to take the lead using the inside lane.
In the final laps, the top three drivers navigated their way through lapped traffic in a suspenseful battle for the lead and win. At the finish, Cochran was victorious by a mere .30 of a second over Rine, who slipped by Davis for second on the final lap. Davis, 12th-place starter Jim Bernheisel, and sixth-place starter Bryan Bernheisel rounded out the top five.
Front-row starter Shaun Miller powered into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature and led flag-to-flag for the victory but not without several challengers. Third-place starter Mike Kiehl, fifth-place starter Kyle Bachman, and eighth-place starter AJ Hoffman were all in the mix for the first half of the race.
The second half of the event saw Miller stretch his lead as an intense battle for second unfolded. Late in the race, Bachman secured the runner-up position but fell 2.4 seconds short of catching Miller. Kiehl, Hoffman, and sixth-place starter Troy Miller rounded out the top five.
The roadrunner race produced four different leaders, beginning with third-place starter Adam Campbell pulling into the front spot at the drop of the green flag. On the second circuit, seventh-place starter Matt Lawrence powered into the lead and was chased by fourth-place starter John Fowler and sixth-place starter Keith Bissinger, who stormed into the lead on the third lap.
Eighth-place starter Bob Bussey advanced to second and made the winning pass using the inside lane entering turn one on the ninth lap. Bussey held the front spot and posted a .90 of a second margin of victory over Bissinger, ninth-place starter Cory Long, 11th-place starter Nate Romig, and second-place starter Dave Adams.
