Puyallup, Wash. — Oct. 4, 2012 — When Trey Starks rolls through the pit gate at Grays Harbor Raceway in his home state of Washington, he expects to run up front and be in contention for a main event win. He has done that on nearly occasion he has raced at the three-eighths-mile this season, picking up a win and three straight podium finishes, including a third-place performance on Saturday, Sept. 29, during “Championship Night” at the track.
Starks has now finished third or better in each of his last five races, and six of his last seven overall starts. In that span, he has made three appearances at Grays Harbor, as well as a pair of starts the Yakima Dirt Track with the ASCS Northwest Region and he also competed with the series at Willamette Speedway in Oregon on Sept.2, finishing second. On the season, the 16-year-old has finished on the podium 12 times.
With the main event at Grays Harbor last Saturday night being lined up by the finish of a six-car dash, which was determined by points earned throughout the season at Grays Harbor, Starks found himself starting seventh, since he did not run for points at the track this year. He used a strong start to move into fifth on the second lap. He worked his way up to fourth just before the halfway point of the 30-lap contest. Starks would take third on the 18th go-around to set up a late-race battle with Henry Van Dam for second. Starks would end up third at the checkered flag. He opened the night by qualifying third of the cars that were required to time-in, and he won the second 10-lap heat race.
Starks, who has two victories thus far in 2012, has picked up 18 Top-10 finishes this season, with 14 of those being Top-Five showings. The third-generation driver has competed with the World of Outlaws this year, as well as the ASCS National Tour, ASCS Northwest Region, the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions, and has also raced in a number of unsanctioned races in both a 360- and 410-sprint car across the Pacific Northwest and in California.
The native of Puyallup, Wash., will return to action next weekend on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif., for the running of the 27th Annual Cotton Classic, which will be sanctioned by the King of the West Sprint Car Series. Starks picked up his first win of the season at Kings Speedway on April 7, which also marked his first win in the state of California. He has made a pair of starts with the series this season at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., earning a seventh-place finish in the finale of a two-night event in May.
