Heading into the final weekend of WSS action, Shane Stewart and his Monte Motorsports team had a mathematical chance at winning the series championship, and they needed a monster performance, though they came up short, Stewart turned in his third win in four races on Saturday night following a 10th place finish on Friday night.
“It was a good weekend for us, and to even be in contention to win the title after the season we had, was a testament to how hard this team works,” Stewart said.
With points being huge for the weekend, each time the Monster Energy/Milwaukee Tools/GearWrench machine hit the track, he was looking to get to the front and accumulate points.
Things got off to a rough start for the Perth based team, as Stewart timed in just 18th fastest.
Looking for good runs in his heat, a fifth place finish put Stewart in the B main, which he proceeded to win with point leader, James McFadden failing to transfer to the feature.
With a prime opportunity to gain on McFadden, Stewart and his team were off a touch, as they were unable to put together a run they were looking for, and ended up 10th.
“We were just a little off all night,” Stewart said. “It’ll be a long shot for us to win the deal now, so Saturday we will just go for the win.”
With a pair of heats and the feature on tap for Saturday, Stewart scored second a fourth place heat finishes aboard his Prosser Toyota/Lucas Oil Prodcuts/KRE powered machine, and locked himself into the eight starting spot of the Grand Finale feature event.
Rolling out in for the fourth row, Stewart slowly worked his way around the Perth Motorplex as he snuck inside the top-five.
Taking advantage of a few late cautions, Stewart grabbed the lead late, and went on to pick up his third feature event win of the series.
“I’m glad we were able to finish, and to win is just icing on the cake,” he said. “We had a rear end getting ready to let go, so I’m thankful it held up. We had the people from Monster Energy here, so it is awesome to win in front of them.”
Shane and his Monte Motorsports team thank Monster Energy, Milwaukee, GearWrench, Prosser Toyota, KRE Engines, Lucas Oil Products, Factory Kahne Shocks, Kaeding Performance, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Miracle Recreation Equipment, Mahle Pistons, Cometic Gaskets, OGIO, GoPro, and DC Shoes.
