Heading into the event, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye sits atop the point standings. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply machine, Davis scored the March 23rd feature win at Casa Grande. To date, the five-time Arizona Champion has two heat race victories, one semi-main win, one hard charger award, five top-5 finishes, and 26 feature laps led. On race night, the veteran driver will have his sights on winning the “Spring Fling.”
Phoenix’s R.J. Johnson is second in the championship points. Piloting Bill Michaels’ #77M Beal’s Auto Body / Sherman Race Cars entry, Johnson raced to seventh after starting nineteenth at Casa Grande. The USAC/CRA “Copper On Dirt” winner has two feature wins, two heat race victories, one Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash win, three top-5 finishes, and 42 feature laps led on the year. R.J. will be looking to win the 30-lap main event and regain the points lead at Arizona Speedway.
Josh Pelkey of Peoria has climbed to third in the point chase. Racing the Robbie and Gaye Allen owned #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts DRC, Pelkey stormed to fourth from tenth at Central Arizona Raceway. The 1997 ASCA Champion has four top-10 finishes to his credit and will be looking to add the “Spring Fling” to his win list.
Sitting fourth in the standings is Tucson’s Ronnie Clark. Driving the family owned #6 RCM / Ellis Race Cars entry, Clark scored tenth at Casa Grande. Currently, the hard charger has one heat race victory and two top-10 finishes on the season. Ronnie won an ASCS Canyon show last June at Queen Creek and will have his sights on retuning to victory circle.
Justin Quinn of Phoenix is fifth in the USAC Southwest points. Piloting the family owned #93 Four Peaks Hardwood Flooring / Lasting Impressions Ellis, Quinn placed ninth at Central Arizona Raceway. The young driver has two top-10 finishes on the season and will be looking to breakthrough with a win at Arizona Speedway.
Among the other top contenders expected to be in action are Brian Hosford, Bryan Swinehart, Tom Ogle, Nick Aiuto, Mike Bonneau, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Shon Deskins, Andy Reinbold, Chris Bonneau, Stevie Sussex, “Bullet” Bob Ream Jr., and many more.
