Andy Gregg welcomed the traveling California Civil War Series to his home track on Saturday night and promptly defended it, as the local product picked up his third win of the season.
“I know it is a big win, but I hate to win like that, especially with the car we had,” Gregg said following the race.
With 35 winged 360’s in the pit area, Gregg opened the night up by timing his Coors Light/LivFast/GUTS Racing No.53 machine in with the second fastest lap of the night, on the extremely slick track during qualifications.
Lining up in the sixth spot of his heat, Gregg continued to show his strength as he clawed his way up to a third place finish, putting his machine in the 30-lap feature event.
With the eight pill being drawn to set up the feature event invert, Gregg found himself lining up in the fourth row, but that did not slow him down.
In a race that was marred with cautions, Gregg was able to grab spots on each start, and restart, as he had gained two spots in the initial start, moving up to fifth when the caution waived on the second lap.
When the caution waived on the seventh lap, Gregg found himself in the fourth spot, but under the caution, second running Greg Decaires pulled off with a flat tire, and Gregg took over third.
The ensuing restart saw second running Bill Aton spin, and Gregg took over the second spot on lap seven.
When the race got back underway, Gregg went low in turns one and two, and slid up the track hoping to clean leader, Justin Johnson, but Gregg didn’t have him cleared entirely, and slight contact was made, and Johnson eventually came to a stop a lap later.
Over the next 23 laps, there was six stoppages, though Gregg was masterful on his restarts, and kept second running Shane Golobic at bay despite a handful of challenges from him.
Glued to the extremely tall cushion, Gregg would run flawless for the final handful of laps, and picked up his third win of the season at the speedway.
“I thought I had him cleared, and I did not, which was 100% my fault,” Gregg said. “From the looks of things, we had a the best car tonight, and I could have been a little more patient, and passed him clean later. My guys gave me a great car on what was a very slick track, that had a really tall cushion.”
