– PLAINFIELD, Ind. (June 3, 2013) – Bill Rose calls himself “Lucky Bill” and “Mr. Lucky” in obvious sarcasm.
Once again, his lack of luck struck on Saturday when the u-joint broke in his truck en route to the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series NAPA Auto Parts Rumble in Michigan at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich.
“The way my year has gone, this was not going be the thing that tipped me over,” he said. “I just wanted to get to the races and be back racing. That’s the only thing I care about.
“It broke the bolts off of it. Luckily it didn’t fall out. It actually felt like a tire exploded. I’m glad I didn’t try to drive it anymore because it would have junked the driveshaft.”
Approximately an hour and a half from the lone event in Michigan, Rose was sidelined by the problem. He called series officials and drew had a number drawn for qualifying. However, by the time the truck was fixed the heat races had concluded.
“There was no way I could get there in time,” he said.
Bill Rose Racing driver David Gravel qualified 16th quickest and finished fifth in his heat race to advance to the feature, where he charged from 16th to ninth. It earned the 12th top-10 finish for Bill Rose Racing this season.
The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, on Friday was postponed because of rain.
Rose, Gravel and the Outlaws are slated for a busy week with four races in five days, beginning Wednesday at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind. They will also race Friday at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa; Saturday at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.; and Sunday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb.
