From Limaland Motorsports Park
Lima, OH — (July 19, 2013) — The establishment of collegiate athletic motorsports at the University of Northwestern Ohio has brought a unique aspect to the racing at Limaland Motorsports Park. While a handful of drivers have won features in the past few years with the Racer’s colors, no one has been as successful as Muskegon, Michigan undergraduate Kody Weisner. He took full advantage of the preferred pole starting position and controlled the 20-car field for all but the opening three laps of the 20-lap K & N Modified feature and captured his third career feature triumph.
This event marked the first time that Racer athletic team cars finished in three of the top four positions. Only track champion and point’s leader Todd Sherman was able to crack the Racer’s triangle with a runner-up result.
Weisner’s teammate Dwight Neihoff rolled to the early lead from his outside front row starting position. As the race developed, Weisner chose the high side of the track surface and by lap number three; he executed a pass on the outside to take over leadership. It proved to be the defining move as the field trailed Weisner through the duration of the event.
Veteran Todd Sherman made an impressive push and chased Weisner from about mid-race to the checkers. He abandoned his usual middle groove position and moved to the top side, but was unable to secure a pass and followed Weisner across the finish line. “I saw Todd coming off of turn two on the last lap,” said Weisner afterwards. “I knew he was coming. The bottom was too slimy to run at the beginning, but I just stayed strong, kept it up front and it all paid off tonight. These guys (team) bust their tails and I can’t thank them enough.”
The return of the K & L Ready Mix NRA Sprint Invaders brought with it the question as to whether anyone other than Randy Hannagan or Jared Horstman could get to the winner’s circle in the Sprints this season at Limaland Motorsports Park. With Hannagan securing an inside row two starting position, it became apparent early that he would be denied another win only if 18-year old racer Max Stambaugh could hold him off for most of the 25-lap feature. The Elida resident Stambaugh, led for the opening eight circuits, until Hannagan reeled him in and made a strong pass for the lead from the outside. The veteran Hannagan used two or three different racing grooves and dominated the rest of the event.
Former full-time Limaland campaigner Sheldon Haudenschild came on strong through the late portion of the race. Haudenschild ran the cushion of the track fearlessly and closed the gap with the leader, but couldn’t make a pass and settled for a second place finish, his best-ever at the track.
It marked a fourth win on the season at Limaland Motorsports Park for Hannagan and the tenth of his career at the western Allen County facility. “”When you are leading you never know how hard you need to run,” reflected Hannagan from the front-straight winner’s circle. “I saw the yellow (#33M Haudenschild) car push his nose out there and I knew I had to start doing something else, so I moved up the track a little bit and it worked.”
The 15-lap Budweiser Thunderstocks feature was all about pole starter Jeff Koz and his ability to outlast a series of caution periods due to on-track action that occurred almost exclusively behind him. Koz has been one of the most dominant racers in the division over the past few seasons and 2013 has proven to be more of the same.
Koz, from Lima, was never threatened, despite a late charge from Shawn Valenti and he was able to post his third win of the season and 12th career checkered flag. “Too many cautions in this one, but lucky for me I was up front and didn’t have to deal with much of that,” said Koz. “I’m thankful to be here in victory lane tonight and still in the hunt for the track championship.”
Limaland Motorsports Park returns to action on Friday, July 26, with the Fricke Memorial Thunderstock Select featuring the Budweiser Thunderstocks. The Elwer Fence Sprints and K & N Modifieds will also compete. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m.
