– MESQUITE, Texas (March 30, 2014) – Tony Bruce Jr. used another consistent night of racing on Saturday to extend his top-10 streak.
Bruce Jr., who performed double duty by racing in the RaceSaver 305 class for Kurt Summers, earned a pair of top 10s during the postponed Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
“It was a solid night for us,” Bruce Jr. said. “I definitely took some of the stuff I learned in the 305 race and applied it to our car.”
Since he was locked into the feature redraw because of winning the opening night of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader at Devil’s Bowl Speedway a week ago Friday, Bruce Jr. took advantage of the extra track time via the 305 class.
He led the distance to win his heat race before finishing eighth in the 305 main event.
“It helped out a lot because I was able to be on the race track and see how the track conditions were,” he said. “It helped me make some decisions for our 360 race at the end of the night. The track looked like it was going slick in some areas, but at the same time it was staying wet in the corners. We wanted to free the car up more and we just didn’t go enough.”
The same issue hampered his team in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour main event, which he started on the inside of the third row.
“It was like a locked-down track, but it wasn’t locked down,” he said. “You couldn’t go to the outside in the corners because your car was too tight. If your car was free enough to get through the corners than it was too free to go down the straightaways because the straightaways were too slick. As soon as you’d get in the corner it was wet and rough. It was difficult to pass. If you didn’t have a car good enough to rotate the corner you definitely weren’t going to pass anyone.”
Bruce Jr. maintained a top five for the entire race and was in a thick battle for a spot on the podium during the closing laps.
“The top five were literally under a blanket for a moment,” he said. “I could see everybody. But the unfortunate thing was we were all the same speed and you had to be on the bottom.”
Bruce Jr. ended with a fifth-place result, which was his fourth consecutive top 10 and moved him to second in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings.
He will return to action this Friday and Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., with the ASCS Midwest Region.
