– MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (March 30, 2014) – Trey Starks continued to build his reputation in the sprint car rich state of Pennsylvania last weekend.
After driving his way into the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series $50,000-to-win National Open feature at Williams Grove Speedway last October, Starks scored a top 10 during his return to the famed half-mile track for its 75th annual season opener last Friday.
“Friday night was pretty good,” he said. “We drew a decent number, so that was a good start.”
Starks started on the outside of the second row of his heat race, which was lined up by a random draw. With the top six drivers advancing to the feature and the top four to the feature redraw, Starks picked up a position to finish third on the fast track.
“We had an initial start and we went from fourth to going for the lead,” he said. “Either the start got called back or somebody stopped. On the second start going into the first corner I went on the outside and got into third and just rode there the rest of the race.”
Starks then pulled the No. 5 in the feature redraw, which started him on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“Fifth was pretty good since the worst you could draw was 12,” he said. “We had a pretty smooth main.”
After losing several positions during the opening laps, Starks rebounded to work his way toward the top five.
“I tried to go around a guy on the outside and kinda got hung up,” he said. “I think we dropped back to about ninth. There were a couple of cautions within the first five laps. After that it was green to checkered and we picked off a couple of spots. It was a tough track to race on because it was one lane and wide open because of the rain.”
Starks recorded a sixth-place result, which marked his second top 10 of the season.
“There were a lot of great cars,” he said. “We ran up front and we know we’ve got the stuff to do it. I’m going for a top five this weekend. Obviously the goal is to win every night, but I think a top five both nights would make a pretty darn good weekend.”
Starks will return to Williams Grove Speedway on Friday and he will make his debut at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., on Saturday after last weekend’s race there was rained out.
