MERCED, Calif. (March 31, 2014) – After three years of perfection at Merced Speedway, bad luck caught up to Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell.
Swindell entered the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race on Friday at the bullring with three feature victories in as many attempts. In fact, he was the only driver to earn a top five in each of those races.
The streak was in contention to continue as Swindell timed the Big Game Treestands car in 14th quickest during qualifying and he won his heat race to lock into the dash, which he started on the inside of the third row.
After picking up a position in the dash, Swindell started the main event fourth. However, as the field was lining up to take the green flag, Swindell was forced to the work area and he had to forfeit his starting position.
“We had a throttle linkage fall off and the bolt came out,” he said. “We started it up and went around there and made two laps and the pedal went down. The pedal wasn’t hooked up to the motor anymore. All it would do was idle. We tried to come in and patch it up, but we didn’t have a bolt in the work area so we tried to put a cable tie in.”
The Big Game Treestands car returned to the track, but Swindell was caught up in a crash prior to the midpoint of the feature. As a car flipped in front of Swindell, he avoided the accident and slowed to a stop only to be hit from behind.
“It’s been the second week in a row when they’ve called for a yellow or a red and I got run into from behind,” he said. “Just one of those nights I guess.”
Swindell ended with a 23rd-place result.
Saturday’s World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series race at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., was cancelled because of rain.
The Big Game Treestands team is slated to compete this Saturday and Sunday at Calistoga Speedway, where Swindell captured World of Outlaws wins in 1990, 1997 and 1999 at the half-mile track.
“(The goal is to) try to get the job done and get the win,” he said. “I think we’re capable of doing that. We just need an opportunity to do that. I’ve always liked the bigger tracks. It separates more of the cars. You have to have a good setup, a good motor. You’ve got to have everything just right or more of it right on the bigger tracks.”
