CALISTOGA, Calif. (April 7, 2014) – Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell is continuing to show improvement with the Big Game Treestands team.

“We’ve been making gains since the second night at Tulare,” he said. “It’s about just putting it all together. It’s tough to find that tenth of a second that you need. The cars are so close. Our whole package – motors, cars, everything – needs to get just a little bit better. We’re not looking for a half a second now. We’re looking for a tenth of a second.”

Swindell tackled the scenic Calistoga Speedway last Saturday and Sunday during the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series doubleheader, which began on a fast track last Saturday after rain soaked the track the previous night.

“Saturday night we had a pretty good run,” Swindell said.

The Big Game Treestands car timed in sixth quickest during qualifying and finished third in the heat race to advance to the main event on the one-lane track.

“We had a pretty good car most of the night,” he said. “There wasn’t much of a race track. It never moved up much. I lost a couple of spots when I tried to move up to go around somebody. Instead of passing them I got messed up and lost a couple of spots. It was pretty difficult getting through it.”

After starting on the inside of the fifth row and losing a couple of positions in the opening laps, Swindell rebounded to post a ninth-place result. It was his fourth top 10 of the season.

The team returned to Calistoga Speedway on Sunday. However, the night got off to a rough start as Swindell had a right rear tire go flat in the middle of his qualifying attempt after rubbing the wall exiting turn four. He was unable to complete his second qualifying lap and ended 17th quickest.

Contact at the start of his heat race knocked Swindell out of the racing line and he finished with a seventh-place result, which was one position out of locking into the 30-lap main event. He then powered the Big Game Treestands car to the Last Chance Showdown victory to transfer to the main event, which he started 17th.

“I felt like we were fast,” he said. “There just wasn’t any place to go. The track was kind of difficult to pass. It seemed like we were in traffic most of the race. A couple of times I tried to go around somebody and we’d get caught out and lose a spot or so. Toward the end we were definitely better.”

Swindell picked up a handful of positions on a restart with five laps remaining to claw toward the top 10. However, his right rear tire began to lose air in the final two laps and Swindell held on for a 12th-place finish.

“At least we got two finishes instead of like the previous two weeks with DNFs,” he said. “We were able to learn some stuff.”

Swindell and the Big Game Treestands team will race this Friday at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif., and this Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, Calif., for the SoCal Showdown with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
