– PERRIS, Calif. (April 14, 2014) – Big Game Motorsports driver Sammy Swindell is leaving the West Coast for the first time since early March.
After spending the last six weeks in the west, Swindell and his Big Game Treestands team are headed to a trio of World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races in Texas this week, which begins on Tuesday at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso and culminates with the $20,000-to-win Texas Outlaw Nationals on Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite – site of the first-ever World of Outlaws race in 1978.
“That will definitely help,” Swindell said. “Most of these tracks are pretty small out here. Everybody is so close together you never know what you are going to get. Once we get back in the Midwest we’ll be on mostly bigger race tracks with more room. With the situation with the cars now, it’s hard to pass. When we get on some of these wider tracks, it will give me the opportunity to outmaneuver or outdrive some guys.”
Swindell capped the West Coast trip by tying his best finish of the season – fourth – last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway for the SoCal Showdown.
“We made a call to change the gear after practice and the track picked up,” he said. “We were a little off there, but it worked in our favor. It put us in the right spot and we were able to get a good start.”
Swindell qualified ninth quickest, which placed the Big Game Treestands car on the outside of the front row of his heat race. Swindell took the lead on the start of the heat and cruised to the win, which locked him into the dash.
“If we could have got the right draw I think we would have had a chance of winning,” said Swindell, who finished fourth in the dash after starting fifth.
The Big Game Treestands car spent the entire main event battling within the top five as Swindell waged a war with Brad Sweet for third place.
“We were right there, but it was a one-lane track,” Swindell said. “We passed each other on starts a few times. He was in the right place at the end once it took rubber. I could push him, but there wasn’t an opportunity to pass.”
The track began to take rubber just beyond the midpoint of the race and Swindell held on for the fourth-place result, which marked his second top five of the season.
The weekend started on Friday at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif., with Swindell the quickest driver in hot laps.
He then qualified seventh quickest and started on the outside of the front row of his heat race.
“The guy on the inside decided to hit the brakes and the officials called me for jumping,” said Swindell, who was penalized a row. “It’s hard to race right behind somebody and that track is pretty round so you’re always turning.”
Swindell ended third in his heat race and he started the main event on the outside of the fifth row.
“The track was quite a bit different,” he said. “That was the first time we’ve been on a track that slick this year. We made some changes to our car. We’ve been having some trouble with our car being too tight. We didn’t get it near tight enough and then we had a stagger problem where we gained an inch and a half of stagger.”
Swindell finished 15th.
