TELFORD, Pa. – April 16, 2014 – California native Paul McMahan is one proud sprint car driver these days.
The wheelman of the #51 Bairs Tree Service/Nyce, Crete & Landis Block & Concrete/All Star Performance sprinter clicked off two more Top-5 finishes to close out the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series spring break tour in his home state.
“We raced eight times in California this spring,” said McMahan. “Aside from two bad finishes (18th at Calistoga on night one and 11th at Stockton) we finished in the Top-10 every night and were in contention to win about half of those races. We didn’t give up at all on this swing and that’s what makes me proud.”
After enduring a trying weekend at Calistoga Speedway, McMahan and the CJB team tackled Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif. and Perris Auto Speedway to wrap up the first of two tours in the Golden State.
“Hanford was a tad slimy,” explained McMahan. “We timed in well and made the dash, which is absolutely crucial. With this new format, you can have a bad run in the dash and still be guaranteed to start in the first three rows. We started third and that is where we ended up. We were good early on and really worked well on the bottom.”
With momentum on the CJB team’s side, the following night at Perris Auto Speedway yielded another strong finish.
“We had another great run at Perris,” said McMahan. “We weren’t very good in the dash but Barry (Jackson) made some adjustments in time for the feature and we were a ton better for the main event. The track proved to be tricky so we weren’t able to move up really in position but we maintained well. The best news is that we rebounded from Calistoga and put ourselves back into the points hunt.”
A mid week stop at El Paso Speed (Texas) Speedway Park netted the CJB team another strong finish as McMahan charged from 11th to 6th in the 30 lap feature.
“We timed in 8th and missed the dash,” said McMahan. ” Luckily, we made some changes and picked up five spots in the feature. It was another very solid night. We now lead the series in Top-10’s and we’re only five points behind Donny (Schatz) for the points lead.”
After over a month on the West Coast, the series begins to trek east towards the bulk of the 2014 schedule. One weekend circled on many of the competitors is the series return to Devils Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas.
“Devils Bowl is where the World of Outlaws started back in 1978,” said McMahan. “My hero, Jimmy Boyd, was the one that won that very first show. That half-mile is very special and unique. The history there ranks it up there with some of the best tracks in the country and it is tricky because the backstretch sits about ten to fifteen feet higher than the front. It creates a challenge when it comes to setups. I’m confident, though, that I have the best team in the pits and I think we’ll be pretty tough when we unload.”
