“Our whole mindset was to find a way to put it in the A Main,” he said. “Fortunately we were able to and we learned a lot about our race car.”

Bruce Jr. was the lone driver competing with a 360ci engine during the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at the fast track. He qualified 23 rd quickest and advanced from eighth to a seventh-place result in his heat race, which was one spot out of locking into the main event.

“We actually were pretty good in the heat race,” he said. “We were right there with the guys for the final transfer spot to go directly into the A Main. I guess it’s gratifying to know that while we were completely down on horsepower and at a race track that requires horsepower, we were right there.”

Bruce Jr. then finished sixth in the Last Chance Showdown to earn a transfer to the main event. After racing for several laps in the feature, Bruce Jr. pulled into the pits in an effort to save his equipment.

“All in all, it was a good test session for us,” he said. “We go to Salina in August and we wanted to make sure we have everything dialed in. We’ve always been decent at Salina. More than anything it was a nice test session for myself being the person calling the shots on the race car this year. I was able to let myself know how greedy I could be with the setup. It was nice to be aggressive and throw caution to the wind.”

Bruce Jr. and his team will return to the track on Aug. 16 with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

Next up, he will compete with the ASCS National Tour in a doubleheader this weekend. The action begins on Friday at Outlaw Motorsports Park in Wainwright, Okla., before the weekend wraps up with the Eagle Motorsports Rock ‘N Roll 50 Presented by MyRacePass on Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark. That marks the first TBJ Promotions event of the season.

“The mindset on the racing side is to go out there and win the race,” he said. “We always roll good at short tracks and I’m looking forward to it.”
