Somerton, AZ — (December 18, 2014) — Cocopah Speedway and the surrounding community has established an entertaining schedule throughout the inaugural Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown.
Parties, bands, concessions and socials highlight the entertainment off the dirt track, which will host more than 50 sprint car drivers on Jan. 2-3, Jan. 6 and Jan. 9-10.
“Our goal for the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown is to create an event rather than just host a few races,” Cocopah Speedway Director of Operations Greg Burgess said. “We have daily activities lined up for the fans and teams to provide something to do throughout all nine days of the event.”
The entertainment kicks off at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve with a welcome reception at the track following by parties at Cocopah Casino and Cocopah Wild River Family Entertainment Center – both located across the street from Cocopah Speedway. Both facilities will hold football parties on Thursday, Jan. 1, as well.
The pits will be open at Cocopah Speedway from 2-5 p.m. each race day for a fan pit party, which will allow fans to meet drivers and listen to live music. A band will also play in the midway from 4-7 p.m. on each weekend race day. Bourbon Street Trio, Downtime, Playin’ Country and Tommy and the Drifters are all bands that will perform live music at one point in the pits and in the midway.
There will be a bowling tournament at Cocopah Wild River Family Entertainment Center on Sunday, Jan. 4, at 11:30 a.m. and a golf tournament will be held at Cocopah Rio Colorado Golf Course on Monday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m.
A Winter Heat social will begin at 5 p.m. at local establishments on all non-race nights. A free concert featuring Checker’d Past is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Cocopah Casino at 8 p.m. and a pub crawl throughout nearby Yuma is set for Thursday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m.
The track opens for free dry camping on Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. local time. Additionally, Southwest Sanitation Services will be on site to service black/gray tank pumping, Diamond Brooks Water will be available to fill tanks with fresh water and CJ’s RV Repair will make on-site RV repairs if necessary.
For ice and snacks, Cocopah Korner Store is across the street from the track entrance and Cactus Propane can fill propane tanks.
More than 50 drivers from across the country have pre-entered to compete in the Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown, which pays $12,000 to win and $1,000 to start during the four weekend races – Jan. 2-3 and Jan. 9-10 – with the Jan. 6 main event winner pocketing $5,000. The top five in overall points from the five races will also earn bonus money from a points fund.
Hot laps are scheduled for 6 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies at 7 p.m. each race night.
