– KNOXVILLE, Iowa (June 14, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi is set to embark upon his first-ever Ohio Speedweek, which features eight Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions races in nine days.
“Everyone I’ve talked to says this is one of the toughest weeks in sprint car racing,” he said. “Going to so many new tracks, all I can do is the best I can and try to adapt as quickly as I can. If we can make the main event and move forward as often as possible I’d say it’d be a great week.”
Scelzi and the Roth Motorsports backed team open the busy week on Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, before racing on Saturday at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio; Sunday at Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio; Monday at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio; Tuesday at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; Wednesday (June 22) at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio; Friday (June 24) at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio; and Saturday (June 25) at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
Atomic Speedway is the only track where Scelzi has competed. He earned a fourth-place result there during his debut last month.
Scelzi is coming off a busy week with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. The action began last Wednesday at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind., where Scelzi qualified 17th quickest and placed seventh in a heat race before recording a runner-up result in the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the back of the main event.
“Lincoln Park Speedway has a lot of California characteristics and looked like a place I’d be comfortable at, but I wasn’t,” he said. “I felt a lot better in the Last Chance Showdown. In the main event I got on the curb and started going forward. We got up to 13th or 14th, but I got over it one lap and lost some spots. Then I went a lap down and unfortunately the yellow flag came out a lap too late.”
Scelzi ended with a 16th-place finish.
The competition shifted to Knoxville Raceway for a weekend doubleheader, which opened on Friday with Scelzi timing in 16th quickest in his group. He was unable to finish a heat race and placed 11th in the Last Chance Showdown.
“On Friday we tried a different car and we kind of struggled,” he said. “We didn’t have any speed and never got going. It seemed like we were plagued with mechanical problems and just bad luck. For Saturday we brought down a different car and changed motors. I felt a lot better. We just didn’t get the starts we needed.”
Scelzi qualified 21st quickest overall and ended sixth in a heat race to miss locking into the feature by one position. He then had to check up on the opening lap of the Last Chance Showdown to avoid a car, which cost him a lot of momentum and several positions. Scelzi finished eighth in the consolation race to end the weekend.
