Continuing his quest for the 2013 Knoxville Cup over the weekend, Ian Madsen scored a fourth place finish, but overtook the points lead at the track.

“We ran with the World of Outlaws on Friday night and struggled a bit, but on Saturday we were very good all night, and ended up taking over the points lead,” Madsen said.

With 27 cars on hand at the Knoxville Raceway, Madsen kicked his night off by timing his KCP Racing/Nehring Construction/Team Kline Electric third quickest, putting him in the night’s third heat race.

Lining up sixth in his heat, the track proved to be on the narrow side, and Madsen held the sixth spot, and transferred to the feature event, where he would roll off on the grid from the sixth spot.

Waiting out a light rain shower prior to the feature, Madsen had a great start, as he moved up into the third spot, chasing after Sam Hafertepe, Jr, and Terry McCarl.

Getting past Hafertepe, Madsen then set his sights on McCarl, as he ran in the second spot.

On a restart with seven to go, Madsen had a shot at getting around McCarl, but a slight bobble saw him lose a couple of spots, and he wound up finishing in the fourth spot, but taking over the points lead.

“We had one shot at getting around Terry McCarl for the win, and I took it, but it backfired on me,” he said.

Friday night, Madsen and his team took on the World of Outlaws at the 34 Raceway in Burlington, IA, a venue they won at earlier in the season.

Time trials hurt the team, as Madsen timed in 22nd fastest, well behind the inversion.

Heat race action saw Madsen score a sixth lace finish, and he would be forced to go through the B main, where he grabbed second.

In the feature event, Madsen started in the rear of the field, and worked his way up to a 16th place finish.

Ian and his KCP Racing team would like to thank Nehring Construction, Team Kline Electric, Logan Contractors Supply, Royal Flooring, Greenland Homes of Iowa, Stepping Stone Genetics, Quality Traffic Control, Factory Kahne, Rider Racing Engines, JRS Excavating, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Smith Precision Products, Moose Blocks, Speedway Motors, Watson’s Express Transport, and Kustom Concrete Pumping for their support.
