The United Rebel Sprint Series polished off the July 4th weekend albeit a day later than scheduled due once again to Mother Nature’s shenanigans of Sunday night dumping 5 inches of rain on the surface. The Rebels made their seventh appearance at the Historic WaKeeney Speedway 3/8’s and once again it produced the seventh different winner of the 2016 Season. Dodge City’s Kris Moore took his first career URSS win just a few weeks after suffering burns on his right leg in the first hot lap session of the May 30th double header.
Oberlin, Kansas’s Aaron Ploussard led the field to the green flag with outside pole sitter Craig Jecha bolting to the lead with Jeff Radcliffe, Moore Zach Blurton and Austin Mclean rounding out the top five after the first circuit.
Moore started to creep up on the second place car of Radcliffe gaining ground each lap. Moore took the spot away on lap four and set his sights on Jecha who had opened up a straightaway lead.
Behind the leaders Blurton was tracking down third running Radcliffe with Mclean in tow. Blurton finally made the pass on lap nine. Further back in the field Jeremy Huish was trying to make the top side work to pass Ploussard and went over the rim of turn four to fall back. Huish tried to make up the ground lost in the miscue as the laps progressed
Up front Jecha continued to lead the way as Moore was closing the gap each lap. Jecha slid high in coming out of turn two, opening the door for both Moore and Blurton to get by. Radcliffe was soon on the tail tank of Jecha and took the position away with three laps to go. Mclean dropped Jecha back to the fifth spot on the white flag lap as the handle went away on Jecha’s mount.
Coming to the checkered flag it was Kris Moore taking his first URSS win with Zach Blurton, Jeff Radcliffe, Austin Mclean and Aaron Ploussard rounding out the top five. Zach Blurton picked up the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger Award, moving up 4 spots.
