CARLISLE, PA. – July 17, 2017 –
The driver was injured in a terrible crash in 1988. Since then, the affable Ohio native has gone on to enjoy a successful broadcasting career as well as being a promoter of the race that bears his name. All throughout the pit area, any driver will tell you that a win in the “Doty” is to be counted among the highlights of a career. CJB Motorsports driver David Gravel can now add that accomplishment to his career.
The event, held at Attica (OH) Raceway Park, saw Gravel time in 3rd in his group, win his heat race and start the feature in 6th. Gravel got around race leader Tim Shaffer coming down to the white flag and held on for the win.
“It’s awesome,” said Gravel, driver of the GoMUDDY.com, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “(When the Brad Doty Classic was) at Lima, I finished on the podium a couple of times and could never win one. To win it at Attica where we couldn’t even make it out of the ‘C’ last year, to rebound like that and win is just awesome. There’s so much prestige with this race. Everybody wants to win Brad Doty’s race and you see it with 58 racecars (in the pits). I’m just happy to do it and do it at Attica.”
Following his 10th Outlaw win of the season, Gravel and the #5 team moved to western Ohio for the three-day Kings Royal weekend at Eldora Speedway. On the opening night, named “Jokers Wild,” Gravel set quick time, won his heat race and rolled off for the feature in the 4th position.
“We’ve had some great speed at Eldora and Thursday night was a continuation of that,” said Gravel. “We’ve wanted to qualify better and we’ve gotten that better. It was a great night overall. We raced well and were in the mix. One cool fact is we almost set a new track record at Eldora in qualifying. We were only about a tenth off.”
The following night was another opportunity for Gravel and his team to lock in their setup for Saturday nights $50,000-to-win event. The GoMuddy.com machine timed in 2nd quick, finished third in their heat race and charged from 16th to 8th in the feature.
“We had a good charge in the feature,” said Gravel. “We learned some things and it was, overall, another strong night.”
With the finale of the weekend upon them, Gravel and the Barry Jackson led team returned with the big money on the line. Within the unique format, the team timed in 6th quick, finished fourth in their heat race and charged from 6th to 1st in the last chance showdown to lock themselves into the nights main event.
“The Kings Royal format is very tough,” explained the Watertown, Conn. native. “Sometimes you catch the breaks and sometimes you don’t. I’m really proud of my guys for how hard we fought to make the show. It’s really important and we did it, even with some struggles.”
The busy month of July continues as the series returns to Lernerville Speedway near Sarver, Pa. for the annual Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup on Tuesday, July 18th before a two night tilt at Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg, for the Summer Nationals. The weekend wraps up with the Big “R” Outlaw Shootout at Ransomville (N.Y.) Speedway.
“Winning the Don Martin was a huge step in my career last year,” said Gravel, who won the Don Martin in 2016 and who scored a victory at Williams Grove earlier this season. “We’re looking forward to going back there as well as Williams Grove. There’s some big money on the line this week. We want to cash in.”
