Brian Brown – Back in the Racing World!

After nearly a month away from racing, Grain Valley, Missouri’s Brian Brown is ready to spring back into action at USA Raceway near Tucson, Arizona this weekend! The Western World Championships will be held this Thursday through Saturday with $15,000 going to the winner of the Lucas Oil ASCS National finale on Saturday night.

Brian has been off for nearly a month. He had planned to run the Short Track Nationals at the I-30 Speedway south of Little Rock, Arkansas the last weekend in October. The event was postponed a week, and Brian had bigger fish to fry than racing. “Little Rock is always an event I look forward to, but we made the decision to get married (on November 7) about a year and a half ago,” he says. “There will be more Short Track Nationals, and you only get married once. It was a good thing, and Heather is a big part of my life.”

After some R&R in the Bahamas, Brian is ready for USA Raceway, a track he has never seen. “I haven’t been there before, but Kevin Montgomery and everyone down there in Tucson has done a great job of promoting the event,” he says. “When I was growing up, the Western World was up there in the top three events that you wanted to win. It’s good to see that it’s getting some of its luster back.”

The event will take in both a full program for the ASCS sprints, but one for the non-wing sprints as well. It has the makings of a new tradition. “Hopefully, there will be a great crowd, and the car count will be good,” says Brian. “This could become one of the crown jewels again, and I’d like to see it take off.”

Brian’s fans who enjoyed his FVP scheme this year will be happy to know that he will be utilizing it in Tucson. “We’ll be running the red FVP car again,” he says. “We’ve won with that car, and hopefully, we will again this weekend. Chad (Morgan) and Grandpa (George Lasoski) have been working hard to get things ready. This almost seems like a new season to me. It’s been almost a month since we’ve raced, and for me, that seems like an eternity.”

Plans are to qualify on Friday, as the field will be split. A standard passing points format is planned, with prelim night’s finishes determining starting spots for Saturday. “I’ve heard mixed things about the track,” says Brian. “I’ve heard it is small, and I’ve also heard it’s a small half-mile. We would prefer it to be the latter, but there are going to be a lot of tough drivers there trying to take home that $15,000.”

The weekend will also have some events off the track, and you can follow Brian’s exploits on both Twitter and Facebook (see links below). “We’ve got some plans surrounding the event with FVP in the area,” he says. “We’ll have an open house on Friday at the Factory Motor Parts location in Tucson. The time off has been good, but it’s time to get back down to business.”

FMP Open House Friday in Tucson

Brian and the SuperClean/FVP #21 team will be on hand with the car at an open house on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Tucson Factory Motor Parts location at 576 East 16th Street.

Brian’s Q&A

Michael Neff asks: Will the change to Goodyear tires at Knoxville change your preparation for the season there, and what are your feelings on the change?

Brian answers: Normally, we get together to practice with a couple teams before the season starts at Knoxville. That won’t change. The new deal gives me some mixed emotions. From day one, I’ve been a Hoosier guy, and they have always been a big supporter. This is a good deal for the promoters and the tracks, as Goodyear is bringing money into it. If it results in a growth of the sport and good racing for the fans, I will be all for it. In a perfect world, we’d have an open competition, but they will all have air in them, and we’ll all be in the same boat as drivers. It will cost me more as an owner, because some of the races we’ll be at, we’ll need Hoosiers. So going back and forth, you’ll be buying more tires.

Brown’s Bits

Brian last raced in Arizona in 2004, driving the Lonny Parsons #6 machine with the World of Outlaws in February. It is a trip Brian would like to forget, as an accident on the first of two nights at Manzanita Speedway badly injured his shoulder. There’s nowhere to go but up for Brian this weekend in the “Grand Canyon State”.
