Avalon Raceway (Geelong, VIC) was a track that Steve Lines has never won a feature race at, but that ended last Saturday night when he drove to a commanding victory in the fourth round of the Eureka Garages and Sheds Super Sprint Series and he also made it back-to-back wins in the annual Fireball Derby.
The current South Australian Champion was in fine form all night after had qualified on pole position for the feature race by virtue of winning the pole shootout in which he entered as the highest point scorer due to a third place and a victory in his two heat races.
“We got it all together and were rewarded with a great night,” said Lines of his maiden feature race victory of the 09/10 season. “It’s a good feeling for the whole team to get our first win of the season under the belt, as we had been close on a number of occasions so far this season, but everything fell into place from the start of the night and we were able to maintain our speed all night thanks to the efforts of the team that really got our J&J car and Maxwill Racing Engines prepared 410ci Chev package working perfectly.”
After numerous Avalon Raceway feature race podium finishes over his five seasons in Sprintcars, Lines last Saturday night opened his feature race winning account at the Geelong, Victoria venue.
“Avalon Raceway is regarded as the home track for the Camden Neon Racing team and to pick up our first win there has been a long time coming,” the VIC # 45 H.A. Young Plumbing / Camden Neon Signs supported J&J driver commented.
Now with first his first victory for the 09/10 season under his belt, Lines hopes that this is going to be the first of many for the remainder of the summer.
“The busy part of the season is just around the corner, so it’s great for the confidence levels to have a victory to our name before we head into that period,” he enthused. “I feel that we have more wins ahead of us this season and hopefully we can make it all happen, especially during a few of the major shows.”
Lines and the Camden Neon Racing team now have a few weekends off before the hectic Christmas / New Year schedule begins with the opening round of the World Series Sprintcar (WSS) Championship Speedweek Series at Speedway City (Adelaide, SA) on Boxing Day Night (December 26).
