Mother Nature hasn’t been very friendly as of late to the sprint car world Down Under with multiple postponements in Sydney and Brisbane. Inclement weather was in the Sydney, Australia area again on Friday night but night one of the Scott Darley Classic went on as planned.
A total of 44 sprinters took qualifying time trials with Craig Dollansky turning a lap of 11.883 seconds which was 18th fastest. With the team in a little bit of a hole after qualifying, the D&B Goodyer Development team discovered the motor wasn’t fueled quite right and made the adjustments for the heat race which showed significantly. In the heat Dollansky started third and powered into the lead at the start and used a strong restart to pull away from Donny Schatz and win the 12-lap event by a straightaway length.
In the A-Main, ‘The Crowd Pleaser’ started outside of row five. When the green flag flew the event would go caution free the entire 30-laps as Dollansky raced past Joey Saldana early on and also with Donny Schatz and NASCAR star Tony Stewart. As the event continued Dollansky turned the fastest lap in the feature but the USA #7 got loose as the laps winded down and would cross the checkers in the 6th position.
The conclusion of the Scott Darley Classic wraps up tonight at Sydney Speedway with the winner taking home the $50,000 top prize. Heat race grids for Saturday are lined up by points accumulated from night one with Dollansky earning the 9th most points.
