Port Royal – Port Royal Speedway lost the 60th annual Labor Day Classic individual event to rain on September 5 and the race itself will not be made up.

Nearly three inches of rain fell on the speedway overnight Sunday and with a dismal forecast for the balance of the day and drizzle falling, the race was called off.

However a race within the races of the current 157th annual Juniata County Fair will determine who gets crowned The Foss Jewelers 2011 Labor Day Champion.

At the end of the fairweek races that span the Labor Day holiday week and conclude with the 44th annual Tuscarora 50 this Saturday, September 10, the champion will be announced based on average finishes in all the completed feature events of the week.

Only drivers who qualified for and started all the mains will be eligible for the title and a $500 prize.

Rick Lafferty has already won the 157th annual fair opener on September 3 and has given himself a leg up on coming away with the best average finish of any driver.

Still, a total of three races remain to determine who gets the best average, including the 50 and the Friday night Living Legends Dream Night Before The 50 twin 20s.

“The Port Royal tradition of awarding a Labor Day Champion is one of the oldest if not the oldest sprint car racing tradition in the country and officials want to keep the annual record intact,” PRS Promotions Public Relations Director Shawn Brouse said.

Racing for both the Friday Living Legends Dream Night Before The 50 twin 20s and the Saturday Tuscarora 50 gets underway at 7 PM.

Adult General Admission Friday is just $20.00 with admission for the Tuscarora 50 set at $25.00. Students ages 12 – 17 will be admitted for just $10.00.
