ATTICA, Ohio – It was mid-season championship night at Attica Raceway Park Friday, June 15, and each of the four division features came down to late race passes for victories on Burns Electric/Fisher Performance Night.
Fremont, Ohio’s Bryan Sebetto passed Craig Mintz late in the non-stop 30 lap O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprint feature and then held off a late race charge from Mintz to score his second win of the season at Attica. Sebetto, the defending Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) Champion, took the lead in the 2012 FAST standings with his fifth career Attica victory.
“That was a lot of fun racing with Craig and Brad (Bowman)…two good friends of mine. We all raced each other hard and clean. With lapped traffic sprinkled in there…it was fun,” said Sebetto beside his Hammer Pallets, JLH General Contractor, Gressman Powersports, OC Shocks, Meggit Powder Coating backed #24h.
“We’ve been fast every night; we just had some unfortunate incidents. We would have had a good car to try and race with Craig here last week. These guys work their butts off…Aaron and Guhn and Timmy P. and Randy…everyone that helps out. Randy and Lisa Hammer put me in the best equipment you could be in. I want to give a quick shout to J.T. Horn…it’s his birthday today and his dad, JLH General Contractors sponsors us. The Gressman motor under the hood of this thing freakin’ runs and the OC Shocks had me tuned in nice tonight,” added Sebetto, also thanking Crown Battery, C.A. Kustoms, Big B’s Pizza, Keizer Wheels, R3 Nutrition.
“I’m in the same mind-set as I was last year…I come here to win races. I’ll worry about the points on the last night. I’m so pumped to get out and run speedweek this year. I’ve been wanting to do it since I got into the 410 deal. I’m really pumped to get out and run some new race tracks and no offense, get out of Fremont and Attica. We will be out the next month out racing. We’re going to Knoxville in a couple of weeks and the Kings Royal and the Doty and we have a whole bunch of races coming up…I’m excited to get out on the road,” concluded Sebetto.
In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature, defending track champion Ryan Missler and opening night winner Devin Shiels battled throughout the 25-lap affair. When Missler slipped up ever so slightly with two laps to go, Shiels pounced and went on to win by a fender. It was his second feature win of his career and the season at Attica.
“I’m glad that last caution came out (with five laps to go). We just kept pushing those tires in as far as we could…I actually thought I had something broke in the right front cause there was so many bumps getting into turn three. I just stayed with it. I thought he (Missler) would go to the high side for sure. I couldn’t believe he went to the low side and he was doing pretty good until that last lap,” said Shiels beside his Rally’s Hamburgers, Dundee Products, Good Lifts, Magic Fountain Auto Wash backed #51.
“It’s really been getting good draws here and at Oakshade. I can’t believe it. My wife is pregnant and we’re going to have to call it a season a little early…maybe she’ll let me come back a couple of times,” added Shiels.
Tiffin, Ohio’s Paige Polyak became the first ever female sprint car winner at Attica, leading all 25 laps of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprint feature. It wasn’t easy as she held off D.J. Foos and Caleb Griffith while battling lapped cars late in the race and a couple of times nearly drove off the track in turns three and four.
“These guys have been working their butts off. Last week we had heating problems and couldn’t get the car to roll around the top real nice and they made a little adjustment tonight and it worked,” said Polyak beside her Steyer Seeds, JLH General Contractor, Handy Grafix, H.E. Rudy Trucking, Meggit Powdercoating, NAPA of Bryan backed #27.
“I saw D.J. and Caleb there at the end. I didn’t know where to go with the lapped cars…luckily I saw an opening in three and four and got around them in the middle and saw the white flag and I was like ‘don’t screw up.’ I have to thank Jeremy and Kelsey, my dad and mom…this is their whole deal as we don’t have a lot of sponsors. I have to thank Duane Hancock and John Oliver…he’s one of the main reasons I’m out here. He heard over the winter that I didn’t have a lot of parts or money…I have to thank him for coming on board,” added Polyak.
In the 15-lap Bob’s Machine Shop Dirt Truck feature, Art Ball and Andy Keegan, both of whom have scored wins at Attica this season, literally battled side by side the entire distance. Ball held the upper hand until they raced to the white flag with Keegan leading by a bumper. They raced side by side the entire last lap with Keegan taking the victory by a nose.
“That was a great track. Hats off to Art Ball for racing me clean. Last week I gave him a little love tap and I was waiting for him to return the favor and he didn’t…he’s a class act,” said Keegan beside his Log Home Dreams, G&H Restoration, B&K Auto Service backed #0. “I knew I couldn’t slip up. That guy, he just doesn’t make a mistake. When or if he does you have to pounce on it right then and there. We’re running top threes here every time. Last October we made the call to race Attica only because my engine isn’t going to make it for 30 races. I just wanted top fives, but winning it is even better.”
Brian Smith and Mike Linder would bring the 410 sprint field to the green of their feature with Linder leading the first lap as fourth place starter Craig Mintz bolted into second. Mintz would storm into the lead on lap 2 as Linder tried to hold off Brad Bowman with Smith battling with Sebetto.
Bowman would drive under Linder for second on the third circuit with Sebetto moving into third on lap five. Bowman would race under Mintz to grab the lead on lap nine but Mintz fought back as the duo raced side by side over the next six laps while Sebetto stalked in third with Linder, Smith and Jared Ridge in pursuit.
Mintz would used lapped traffic to regain the lead on lap 11, with Bowman continuing to race to his inside. Bowman would regain the lead on lap 14, with Sebetto now joining Mintz to challenge. Mintz would drive back into the lead at the halfway point as he, Bowman and Sebetto raced through traffic. Sebetto would take second on lap 17 and drove to the top groove to battle Mintz for the lead.
Sebetto would drive around a lapped car and Mintz to take the top spot on lap 21 with Bowman now trying to hold off a closing Linder and 12th place starter Chris Andrews. With five laps to go, Sebetto was trying to negotiate through traffic, allowing Mintz to close as Bowman not battled Andrews for third. Once clear of traffic, Sebetto would fly to the checkers over Mintz, Andrews, Bowman and Linder in a race that took only eight minutes to complete.
Missler and Shiels would pace the field to the green in the late model feature, which was slowed over the early stages by numerous cautions. Before a lap could be recorded, Bob Mayer would spin. On the second try, Missler and Shiels would race side by side for the lead with Ernie Haynes, Dave Hornikel, Dusty Moore and Dan Wallace in pursuit.
After two laps were in, a multi-car pile-up involving Brandon Perkins, Chester Fitch, Nate Potts and Mayer would bring the action to a halt. On the restart, Missler and Shiels again resumed their tremendous battle for the lead with Moore now moving into third with Haynes, Justin Chance and a charging John Mayes Jr. in tow. Another caution on lap five for debris would keep the leaders away from traffic.
Each restart would see Missler and Shiels battle side by side for the lead with Moore glued to their rear bumper while Haynes, Chance, Mayes, Hornikel and Jeff Babcock waging a tremendous race for fourth. Following another caution for debris on lap 7, Steve Sabo would spin on lap 9 for the fifth caution of the race.
On the restart, Missler pulled away slightly from Shiels and Moore, But Mayes and Haynes would get together on the front stretch on lap 10, sending Haynes spinning for another caution. This time on the restart, Shiels stayed glued to Missler with Moore, Mayes, Babcock, Chance and Dan Wallace giving chase. As the race finally got going, Missler, Shiels and Moore would race in close quarters while Chance, Mayes, Babcock and Wallace had a good battle for fourth.
The final caution flew with five laps to go when Babcock suffered mechanical woes and coasted to a stop. On the restart, as they had the entire race, Missler and Shiels battled side-by-side for the lead with Moore trying to hold off Chance and Mayes for third. As they came to the line to complete the 23rd lap, Shiels had gained the lead by a nose. Shiels and Missler literally raced door to door over the next two laps with Shiels taking the win by a nose over Missler while Moore, Chance and Mayes rounded out the top five.
In the 305 sprint feature, Polyak and Griffith would bring the field to the green with Polyak rocketing to the top groove to take the lead. Fourth place starter D.J. Foos, who had won 5 of the year’s 8 features, would grab second a lap later just as the caution flew for a Ryan French spin.
On the restart Polyak was able to pull away from Foos who battled with Griffith for second while Seth Schneider, Jimmy Colvin and Nate Dussel gave chase. A Jason Keckler spin on lap four would stop the action and give Polyak a clear track which she used to build a sizeable lead. But, just as Polyak would pull away, a bobble in turns three and four up on the cushion would allow Foos and Griffith to close as they raced into lapped traffic on lap nine.
By lap 13, Polyak was in heavy traffic, allowing Foos and Griffith to pull to within a car length. When Dean Kester spun on lap 15, it was the break Polyak needed. Now with a clear track, she once again pulled away. But, with six laps to go, Polyak had caught the rear of the pack, and once again Foos and Griffith closed with Colvin and Dussel battling for fourth. With two to go, it now was a tight three car battle for the lead.
As Polyak took the white flag, Griffith drove around Foos into second and right on the leader’s rear bumper. They raced nose to tail into turn three on the final lap, but Polyak hit her marks to perfection and drove to the win over Griffith, Foos, Colvin and Dussel.
Keegan and Ball, tied for the dirt truck point lead coming into the double-point mid-season championship event, would bring the field to the green. Ball would grab the top spot, with Keegan racing right on his rear bumper and at times under the leader. After a lap was recorded the caution flew for debris. But once the green came back out, Ball and Keegan continued their tremendous battle for the lead with Brian Sorg, Brian Arnold, Jeff Wank and Dan Roepke Jr. in pursuit.
As Ball and Keegan continued to race hard for the lead, Sorg and Roepke would race side by side for third. As they came to the white flag, electronic scoring had Ball and Keegan in a virtual tie for the lead with Roepke by a nose over Sorg for third. With John Ivy and Arnold right there.
As they raced out of turn four to the checkers, Ball slipped up ever so slightly, allowing Keegan to drive under him to take the win by a fender. Sorg, Ivy and Roepke would round out the top five.
Attica Raceway Park will kick off the 30th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek – nine straight nights of racing across the Buckeye State featuring the University of Northwestern Ohio All Star Circuit of Champions – on Friday, June 22. The UMP Late Models will also be in competition.
