SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Selinsgrove Speedway will present two high-profile events this Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, featuring the super late models in the 14th Annual Foss Jewelers Late Model Open on Saturday and the 358-360 sprint cars in the Mach 1 Chassis Mid-Atlantic Championship Series on Sunday. Race time both nights is 7:30 p.m.
Saturday’s race will showcase the late models in a 30-lap A-main paying $5,000 to win and $300 to start out of an $18,000 purse. Time trials, heat races, and a B-main will be the qualifying format for the late models. The Open will be an open tire event.
The 358 sprint cars and pro stocks will also be on Saturday’s racing card. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
Chris Shuey of Orefield won the inaugural Late Model Open in 1999 followed by a win in the 2001 race. Jeff Rine of Danville, the track’s current point leader, is the only four-time winner of the race, having won Open championships in 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009.
Other past winners of the Open include Kenny Pettyjohn of Millsboro, Del. (2000); Dale Kerstetter of Liverpool (2002); Jeff Smith of Blain (2003); Scott Haus of Hamburg (2004); Nick Dickson of Lewistown (2007); Dan Stone of Thompson (2010); and defending winner Rick Eckert of York.
Race sponsor Foss Jewelers, located on Route 522 in Selinsgrove, has been providing customers from central Pennsylvania and beyond with affordable, high-quality jewelry backed by unsurpassed customer service since 1949. Foss Jewelers also sponsors the gold championship rings that are presented to each of the speedway’s track champions at the annual awards banquet in November.
Selinsgrove Speedway will swing back into action on Sunday with the fifth event in the inaugural six-race, $120,000 Mach 1 Chassis Mid-Atlantic Championship Series for 358-360 sprint cars. The 25-lap main event will pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start out of a purse totaling $15,000.
Four races in the series have produced four different winners. The opener at Selinsgrove on March 31 was won by Pat Cannon of Etters. Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove won the URC-sanctioned Jack Gunn Memorial Challenge Race at Selinsgrove on May 12. Daryn Pittman of Owasso, Okla., scored the single event of the series at the Lincoln Speedway on June 20. Jason Shultz of Carlisle won the June 29 race at Selinsgrove competing in a 358 sprint car.
In the Mach 1 Chassis Series standings entering this Sunday’s race, Mark Smith of Sunbury (1,100) holds a 40-point lead over Davie Franek of Wantage, N.J. (1,060). TJ Stutts of Liverpool (1,030); Cannon (990); and Jessica Zemkin of Sprakers, N.Y. (850) round out the top five. The top 10 finishers in the point standings will share an $8,000 point fund sponsored by Mach 1 Chassis.
The series finale will be the 12th Annual National Open for 358-360 sprint cars at Selinsgrove Speedway on Sept. 1. For the third consecutive year, the Open will pay $8,000 to win out of a $36,000-plus purse.
Joining the 358-360 sprint cars on Sunday will be the Pennsylvania Sprint Series (PASS) regional RaceSaver 305 sprint cars in the division’s first-ever appearance at Selinsgrove Speedway. The 305 sprint cars will race for a separate $4,060 purse, including a $560 stipend posted by Mach 1 Chassis. The 305 sprint car drivers will compete in their own series of heat races and a 20-lap feature.
