Marrogin, AU — (October 28, 2012) — Eighteen, 360 sprintcars made it to the Hillside Narrogin Speedway on Saturday night for a spectacular opening round of the MMS Civil Sprintcar power Series.
The Narrogin Speedway had done an excellent job in preparing the venue for all racers as well as the sprintcars on hand.
As hot laps commenced the hot wheatbelt sun slowly dropped behind the hills taking with it the warm conditions and as expected we were in for a cold night ahead, which is perfect for Sprintcar racing.
After hot laps the 19 of Trent Pigdon, 15 Greg Fisher & Kent Roberts in the immaculate number 4 chamberlains Auto Electrics backed car were the stand outs, heat races were next on the track.
Heat race 1 line up 53, 68, 60, 44, 64, 33, 49 & 4, Muir & Waldron didn’t have their night start well, ending on the infield before the green, Element was never headed for the race distance taking an easy win from Terry and stocks.
Heat race 2 took the green in this order 61, 74, 19, 32, 56, 15, 76, 2, 90 this was a great heat for the entire distance as seven cars battled for positions 2 to 8, while this was happening Pigdon in the outstanding number 19 machine drove away comfortably, second was Gardner and third was the ever improving Sotiroff.
Heat 3 was a green to checker finish for Fisher closely followed by Dean Terry from Kalgoorlie and rounding out the top 3 in the end 2 end Motorsports machine was Billy Stocks.
The fourth heat entered a very dusty race track which brought a few cars undone along the way, finishing results was Sotiroff in the Wells racing number 76, followed by a very fast finishing Trent Pigdon who came from the back row and in 3rd was Corey Gilpin.
Heat 5 had slowed down dramatically since the pace at the beginning of the night, Final heat 5 placing a saw Waldron get the win from Billy Stocks & Trent Pigdon in 3rd.
The final heat race result was Ben Ellement, Garry Bielby & Corey Gilpin.
The Narrogin Speedway track crew worked hard during interval on a full track grade and water, as the heat of the day had dried out the race surface. Pigdon being high points after the heats had the choice to take either spot on the front row, with the track becoming one lane, he chose wisely and took P1.
On the green the 17 cars headed into turn 1 with Sotiroff tagging the wall and ending his night on the infield, on the restart Pigdon shot out to a commanding lead which he held for most of the event, a third of the way into the race the 49 of Ryan Schalm got sideways leaving no where to go for rookie Jake Miller and the two became one as their night also ended on the infield.
On the final restart the class of Pigdon showed as he again shot out to a big lead with Ellement and Stocks chasing him down, in. lapped traffic Pigdon was all class, never being headed as he took the checker flag and the victory in round 1 of the MMS Civil 360 Power Series, back in the field on the white lap, elements car coughed and have Stocks the chance for second, Ellement composed himself to finish third.
After the event I spoke to Pigdon on his win “It was good to come down here tonight and get some laps in this car, we really like the 360 series and will be looking forward to doing as much as we can this year, Keith and the boys gave me a great car and that made things a Iot easier for me to drive, I can’t thank my family enough for the support as we now head back home and prepare for next week”
Other notable points from the night: Kalgoorlie Based Dean Terry who could not take the track in the main event due to electrical problems showed promise all night, the pace of Kent Roberts in the Chamberlains Auto Electrics #4 was good to see for its first night on the track as was Daniel Keen who got better as the night went on. Tough night at the office for series sponsor Mat Muir in the MMS Civil #53 Murphy, fuel issues would hamper their night, and the potential. Of the Ostrich 360 power-plant, add to that Gilpin, Gardner, Woods, Archee and Waldron and this 2012 series is shaping up for good things.
Attrition was limited as most cars finished the main even except for 76, 49 & 32, good to see so many people at the venue supporting the 360 power series, a very healthy crowd was on hand at the track.
The series now moves onto Manjimup Speedway on November 17, and if last night was a preview of what’s to come this season it will be an exciting MMS Civil 360 Sprintcar series in 2012.
