Starting his season for the second consecutive year at the Marysville Raceway Park, Tommy Tarlton bettered his 2012 results by one spot as he scored a second place finish on Saturday night.
The night got off to a so-so start for the Easton, CA pilot as he timed his Corporate Lending America/Tachi Palace and Casino/Sharp Insurance mount in ninth quick, putting him in the second row of his heat race.
Getting a great jump in his heat, Tarlton worked into the second spot, as he hounded, track regular, Colby Weisz for the point.
Though he pulled up to Weisz’s back bumper, Tarlton would settle for the second spot, and narrowly make the night’s redraw for the feature event.
Pulling the five pill, ‘The Terminator’, lined his Bandy and Associates/Pro Signs/BG Lubricant’s machine up in the third row for the feature event on the very fast racing surface.
Hitting the loud pedal, Tarlton worked into the fourth spot as he chased down Justin Sanders for the first five laps, until the caution flew on the fifth lap.
On the ensuing restart, Tarlton made an awesome move taking the green to jump into the third spot, and set his sights on Sean Becker and Andy Gregg.
With race leader, Andy Gregg, having problems on the seventh lap, all eyes shifted to Becker and Tarlton, as the duo would put on a dogfight over the remaining 23 laps.
With Becker breaking away with a clear track, the race heated up once he caught traffic, and Tarlton was persistent in his battle, getting under Becker several times, but never quite able to pull in front of him.
With a late caution setting up a green, white, checkered finish, Tarlton had one final shot at the win, but came up short, and settled for second aboard his K&N Products/All Star Performance/Astro Titanium machine.
“We were a little off early in the night as the track was fast, but we had a good car in the feature,” Tarlton said. “Everyone involved with this Tarlton Racing team worked their butts off all night, and I can’t thank all of the people who back this team, for letting us get out here and start our season.”
