Hanover, PA (05/17/13) – One night earlier, Robbie Kendall was competing against the World of Outlaws super sprint tour at Lincoln Speedway and was unable to qualify for the A-main as he finished sixth in the B-main.
On Friday night at Trail-Way Speedway, Kendall fared muchbetter with a 358 cubic-inch engine in his No. 55K. Kendall passedearly race leader Brad Gleason on the 14th lap and won the 25-lap feature to become the fourth different 358 sprint winner at the track this season.
“Racing with those guys, I learned a lot,” Kendall said of his encounter with the World of Outlaws at Lincoln. “That track was alittle slick, but that’s the way those guys like it and we have toadapt to it. We didn’t go that well.”
That was not the case on Friday after Gleason drove offfrom the outside pole position at the outset and built a lead ofnearly three seconds through nine laps. The red flag then waved when Zach Eucolano’s No. 10 slammed the fourth-turn wall. Isaac Sneeringer’s car collided with Eucolano, ripping apart the top wing ofthe No. 19Z and ending Sneeringer’s night. Both drivers escaped injury.
However, Kendall’s car, which started fifth, found its stride after the accident. Surging to second spot after the restart, Kendall worked his way past Gleason in the second turn on the 14th tour of the 1/3-mile oval to grab the top spot.
“I got into the 33 (Gleason’s car) coming off (turn) two. I’m sorry about that. He kind of came down and I was hanging off the corner,” Kendall said.
Kendall was never headed after that, though his chief pursuers changed over the remaining distance. Hanover’s Cris Eash passed Gleason for second place on the 16th tour, but Eash then fell victim to Brad McClelland with three laps remaining. However, McClelland could not chase down the Catonsville, Md., driver.
“We knew that was coming rather soon,” McClelland, who drove from ninth starting spot to second place for the Hard Charger Award, said about Kendall’s win. “He was definitely sitting up on the wheel there. I wish we would have had a caution there to see what we could do.”
Eash took third place ahead of Jeff Rohrbaugh, Austin Hogue, Gleason, polesitter Shane Hoff, track points leader TimWagaman, Jason Cunningham Jr., and Randy Whisler.
McClelland and Rohrbaugh claimed heat wins.
Honey Brook’s Shane Lewis dominated the 600cc micro sprintfeature from the pole to give a second car numbered 55, this time 55L, the victory by 1.73 seconds over Johnstown’s Jim Young. Tyler Esh took third place ahead of Bo Gordon Jr. and Travis Scott.
The division featured the night’s spectacular crash when Brandon Noel’s No. 10B climbed the second turn wall and rode it to thepit exit, after which the car flipped end over end and lost its top wing. He was unhurt in the heat race crash.
Young and Shawn Seifert won heats for the 19 600cc micro sprints.
Gettysburg’s Brian Walls took the lead from polesitter Brian Diehl on the second lap and drove off to victory in theeight-car thundercar feature. Diehl settled for third place behind Kyle Martin at the finish. Diehl won the heat race.
York Haven’s Mike Potts claimed a four-car dash for the4-cylinder stocks to win the 15-lap Miller’s Fall Classic Qualifier. Fredericksburg’s Eric Hollenbach, who won the heat race, finished a close second while Frank Gordon II and Ed Hollenbach completed the field.
On Saturday (5/18), Trail-Way will welcome the AMA short-track motorcycles for the second annual Armin Hostetter Classic. The track will open at 4:30 p.m., 90 minutes before the 6 p.m. start.
Next Friday (5/24), Trail-Way conducts Armed ForcesAppreciation Day with $4 off admission for military personnel with identification cards. That program features the Insinger Fuels 358 Spring Championship, which pays $1,200 to the winner of the 358 sprint feature. Limited stocks and street stocks are also scheduled for the 7:30 p.m. program.
The next week (5/31), Trail-Way will host Camera and Autograph Night, which will feature the 358 sprints, Central PALegends, street stocks and limited stocks.
