May 21, 2013 – Kerry Madsen is in the midst of the World of Outlaws eastern tour. A combination of a tough draw and the tough Pennsylvania Posse were the story last weekend, and the Keneric Racing #29 team finished 14th last night in Middletown, New York. Things continue tonight at the New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey, on Friday at the Dirt Track in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Monday at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana.
Lincoln Speedway near Abbottstown, Pennsylvania’s event was postponed one evening to Thursday night and Kerry came out late to qualify 40th quick. “Obviously, we weren’t good qualifying,” he says. “We drew the last car out, and probably didn’t do the best laps we could.”
The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia native almost pulled his night out of the fire in his heat. He drove from 10th to third, one spot out of a Dash transfer position. “We got going really well,” says Kerry. “We nearly got to a transfer spot to the Dash. We just missed it by a little bit. That would have been a huge move. I thought I had him (Sam Hafertepe Jr.). He kind of changed his line on what he was doing. It was a perfect move on his part…it just screwed me up you know.”
Kerry drove from 24th to 16th in the feature. “We ended up passing a few cars,” he says. “We had a decent racecar. Sometimes, you can pull some magic from the back and get yourself into the top ten. It rubbered down, so it was hard to do anything the last half of the race.”
It was on to Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg on Friday. Kerry timed in 33rd in the typically tough field. “It was a similar situation in that we drew close to the back of the pack in qualifying,” he says. “We were really good in hot laps, so we kind of left it alone. For whatever reason, that didn’t translate to a good time.”
Not able to get through his heat or the B main, Kerry took a provisional for the feature, but ended with a DNF. “We just couldn’t get going in the B main,” he says. “We had to take a provisional. We were making a little headway in the feature and got a flat tire. We weren’t able to make it back out.”
The Orange County Speedway in Middletown, New York was postponed from Sunday to last evening. Mechanical gremlins were the story of the night. “We broke a rear-end in hot laps,” says Kerry. “We were just able to get it replaced. We didn’t’ get qualified well (18th), because we were just thrashing.”
More problems arose after the heat, in which Kerry finished sixth. “Our steering gear went bad in the heat,” he says. “So we had to change that before we went out for the feature. We made it out just in time and drove up to 14th. We got a great start, getting by two cars on the first two laps, and then it was ‘follow the leader’ around the bottom for 23 laps after that. I was sitting on Justin Henderson’s rear bumper for 23 laps, waiting for a mistake. It was unfortunate, but that’s the way it was.”
The team is excited about getting things going, starting tonight. “We need to get our mojo going back here in New Jersey tonight,” sasy Kerry. “I’ve been here once, but I can’t really remember it. We’re really looking forward to Charlotte, and I really enjoyed Lawrenceburg last year. We did well there.”
