ELMA, Wash. (Sept. 18, 2013) – Henry Van Dam capitalized on another consistent night by recording a podium finish at Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday.
Van Dam set quick time in qualifying and charged from sixth to second place in his heat race, earning him the most points of any driver in the field. The No. 2 was drawn to flip the first two rows, which started Van Dam on the inside of the second row for the feature.
“The track was pretty narrow,” he said. “It was pretty hard to pass. They tried to work on the track for the feature. As fast as it was, once we got stretched out there wasn’t a whole lot we could do.”
Van Dam took advantage of the lone caution on Lap 5 to use a slider in turn two to gain the runner-up position. By that time the leader was ahead by a straightaway and Van Dam was unable to reel him in.
“I got one spot on a restart and that was pretty much it,” he said. “We all just rode around there.”
Van Dam is scheduled to wrap up the ASCS Northwest Region with a doubleheader at Central Washington State Fair Raceway in Yakima, Wash., this weekend. He won his heat race both nights before being crashed in the feature each night at the fast track last season.
“We actually ran a lot better than what our finishes were both times,” he said. “There’s times
it’s a lot of fun. Other times it’s so rough and rocky it’s hard to race.
“As far as expectations, we go into every night thinking that we can win and we should win. It’s our last shot to get on the ASCS win list. For us, it’s pretty important to go out and get a couple of wins.”
Van Dam will earn his third consecutive runner-up performance in the ASCS Northwest Region standings by making the feature each night.
