The Trophy Cup is the rare event where you have to be aggressive, but look at the ‘big picture’ at the same time, and when the dust settled on the always exciting event, Kyle Hirst found himself fifth in the standings after finishing seventh in the feature event.
With 81 cars checked in at the event, Hirst timed his Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/3H Cattle 39th fastest, as a late draw put him on an extremely slick surface.
Lining up seventh in his heat, Hirst took advantage of a couple other drivers misfortunes, and moved up into the third spot, and went on to finish second, and transfer into the 30-lap preliminary night feature event.
Lining up 18th in the feature event, KH continued to pass cars and charge to the front, as he worked up to the 11th spot when the caution waived at the halfway point.
By the 20th lap the Sacramento, CA driver cracked the top- 10 and he went on to get up to the seventh spot, when the checkered flag flew, putting him ninth overall in Trophy Cup standings.
Lining up seventh in the third heat on Saturday night, Hirst continued to flex his muscle as he carved forward and finished third, acquiring more points heading into the feature event.
Sitting eighth in points, Hirst lined up in the ninth row for the exciting 50-lap feature event.
As the race got off to a slow start due to a couple of cautions, Hirst found himself in the 11th spot on the 11th lap.
A lengthy red allowed crews to make adjustments, and back underway the race went 26 straight green flag laps, and Hirst raced with Rico Abreu, Terry McCarl, and Shane Golobic as he found himself in ninth when the cautions flew on the 37th lap.
Getting up into the seventh spot with just three laps to go, the complextion of the race changed on the last lap as the leaders go together and wrecked.
With some drivers checking up because of the wreck, the checkered still waived, and Hirst was scored in the seventh spot, and fourth in the points.
It was a wild weekend, and I can’t thank my crew enough for working so hard,” Hirst said. “We went out late qualifying and were lucky to make it into a heat race, and fortunately we raced well all weekend and salvaged it by finishing fifth in this deal.”
Kyle and his Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, 3H Cattle, Mobil1, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2013.
