Mesquite, TX — (March 23, 2014) — Kevin Swindell and the Blazing Racing team got off to a hot start last Friday.
In their first race together, Swindell piloted the car to a podium finish during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
“For the first night out we had a really good balance,” Swindell said. “I don’t think we could have been too much better. It’s definitely a good start.”
After a high pill draw started Swindell seventh in the first heat race, he maneuvered to a runner-up finish that earned him enough points to advance to the feature redraw.
“It wasn’t the number we wanted, especially being in the first heat race,” he said. “They wrecked getting into turn one on the first start and it moved me up a row. On the second start they wrecked again and got me another row. I ended up starting third and it was just run wide open. It got us plenty of points and we redrew a four.”
That started Swindell on the outside of the second row for the 25-lap main event on the ultra-fast track.
“They decided to start using a box (on the starts),” he said. “I don’t think anybody understood it. (Matt) Covington was on the outside front row and Tony (Bruce Jr.) went too early and none of the outside row went on the start. I think we were sixth or seventh by the time we got into turn one. It was follow the leader around the bottom.”
Swindell rallied into the third position by the midpoint and was in a thick battle with Covington for the runner-up position in traffic when the caution came out with approximately eight laps remaining.
“I was probably a little better than those guys in traffic,” he said. “It was a clear track when we restarted and it was too fast and too one lane to make up time.”
Swindell ended with a third-place result, which locked him into Saturday’s feature redraw with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. However, the race was postponed because of the threat of rain.
Swindell and the Blazing Racing team are scheduled to compete this Saturday at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for the 4th annual Air Capital Shootout with the NCRA.
“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity that Todd and Susan LaHaise have provided,” he said. “Right now we’re going to run as many races as our schedules allow and see if everything works out well and go from there. We’re going to go race as much as we can.”
