HIGHLANDS, Texas (April 7, 2014) – Seth Bergman captured his first victory of the season during a benchmark weekend at Battleground Speedway.
Bergman led the final 22 laps to claim the ASCS Gulf South Region opener last Friday before nearly sweeping the weekend with another dominant performance on Saturday.
“It was the weekend I’ve been waiting to happen,” he said. “We finally got the first win. As fast as we’ve been all year, just to put a night together is great. Everything went right.”
On Friday, Bergman won his heat race from the pole position, which earned him enough points to advance to the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 4 to start the 25-lap main event on the outside of the second row.
“The track took rubber earlier in the night and the track crew did a good job to rework it,” he said. “I knew I was going to have to make big moves early in case that rubber came back. My mentality was to go hard and try to get the lead early. I took a chance and went to the middle of the race track and it ended up working.”
Bergman powered to the lead on Lap 4 and then held on to the top spot in thick traffic for the remainder of the main event.
“It was a good race,” he said. “I feel like in the open track we kind of distanced them a little bit. It was tough racing traffic. We were probably side by side, wheel to wheel for the lead a couple of times, but I never got passed.”
The win locked Bergman into Saturday’s feature redraw, during which he plucked the No. 1 to start on the pole.
“We got the jump and I got through traffic the whole race until the end,” he said. “The race got to where it was on the bottom at the end. I was trying to open my corner entry up and I made one mistake. I opened my entry too much and Jason (Johnson) plugged the hole and I couldn’t get back to the bottom.”
Bergman dropped from the lead to third place in that corner with a handful of laps remaining. He ended with a third-place result, which was his third top five of the season.
“That’s a tough one to swallow,” he said. “I let lapped traffic get the best of me. Those are the races to really learn something.”
Bergman is slated to compete this Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour and on Sunday at West Siloam Speedway in West Siloam Springs, Okla., with the ASCS Sooner Region.
