HIGHLANDS, Texas (April 6, 2014) – Ray Allen Kulhanek is 4-for-4 in starting last during his heat race this season.

He has also powered into the feature redraw at every race, including both races at the ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader last weekend at Battleground Speedway.

“I’ve made every redraw and haven’t capitalized on any of them,” he said. “I have not had any good luck.”

Kulhanek continued his passing ways on Friday during the opener, where he maneuvered from seventh to a third-place result in his heat race. That gave Kulhanek enough points to advance to the feature redraw.

After pulling the No. 3 in the redraw, Kulhanek lined up on the inside of the second row for the main event.

“They rewatered the track after the heat races and I made a bad judgment call,” he said. “We ran in the top five for the first half of the race and then it was like we threw an anchor out and started going backward. It was way too free. It got 100 times worse as the race wore on.”

Kulhanek held on for an eighth-place finish, which marked his second top 10 of the season.

The team returned to Battleground Speedway on Saturday for the finale and Kulhanek again started on the final row of his heat race.

“If we had another half a lap we would have won it,” he said.

Kulhanek powered from ninth to the runner-up performance, which once again advanced him into the feature redraw. This time he drew the No. 7 to start on the inside of the fourth row for the 25-lap feature.

“We jumped up to fourth and ran there past halfway,” he said. “We had a motor issue and had to pull in with about seven or eight laps to go while I was running fourth. If I could get the whole night to come together I feel like we could go to winning races. As soon as I get this bad luck off my back it’ll go well.”

Kulhanek was credited with a 14th-place result and he now ranks eighth in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.

“We’re hitting our setups at the beginning of the night,” he said. “Coming from the back you know you don’t have a choice but to go forward. We’ve been doing well as far as getting our setups right and being able to get around guys. The car has been really maneuverable. However, the heat races don’t pay the money; the features do. I’ve got to be able to close out a night.”

Kulhanek will take this weekend off before competing with the ASCS Gulf South Region at Heart O’Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, on April 18 and at Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, on April 19.
