(Lebanon, IN) When the USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series opens at the Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis Speedrome on Saturday April 19, three drivers will be chasing the Simpson World Indy Rookie of the Year award. Brothers Logan and Ryan Huggler will be joined by Ashley Albertson in the quest to be USSA’s top Midget Rookie.
Simpson World Indy will award the 2014 Rookie of the Year a Simpson Helmet, a $900.00 value. Past winners of the Simpson World Rookie of the Year Award are Jessica Bean, Dameron Taylor and Clayton Gaines.
USSA awards points to rookie contestants on the basis of where they finish a race in relation to each other rather than where they finish in the overall standings. USSA rookies are not only racing the whole field they are racing each other. The point’s structure is 9, 4, 4, 3, 2, and 1. In 2013 Gaines edged Cole Fehr by just 5 points over a 15 race season to earn his Simpson helmet.
Designed to be an affordable racing series, the Mel Kenyon Midget Series is for open wheel racers on a budget, drivers looking for open wheel racing experience and competitors whose goal is to have fun in a competitive series that keeps the travel reasonable. Bryan Clauson, Justin Allgaier, Dakota Armstrong, Bobby East, Chris Windom, Jacob Wilson and many more have raced Kenyon Midgets during their careers.
