Sending the World of Outlaws back east with a sixth place finish at the Kings Speedway on Friday night, Kyle Hirst kicked off his King of the West title defense on Saturday night at the Thunderbowl in Tulare, CA with a second place finish.
“All in all it was a really strong weekend for the 83JR team,” Hirst said. “We would have loved to win at least one of the shows, but we will definitely build off of this weekend and move forward.”
Saturday night saw the Chico, CA resident time his Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/3H Cattle entry in second fastest, putting him in the second row of his heat race.
Jumping into the second spot, Hirst would chase after Tommy Tarlton, and come up shot, settling for second, but his qualifying time made him eligible for the Dash, and Lady Luck would have him pull the one-pill.
Starting on the pole of the Dash, Hirst jumped on the throttle as he grabbed the early lead, and never looked back, winning the Dash, and earning the right to start on the pole of the feature event.
Though the early portion of the race was marred by cautions, Hirst was unable to get the jump he was looking for as he slipped back to the third spot, as he battled with Willie Croft as he also chased after early leader, Tommy Tarlton.
A mid-race red following the race’s first long green flag run, put Hirst in position to make a bid at the leaders, and with Croft’s right-rear tire going down, he was able to take advantage of it, and move into the second spot, on the 20th lap.
On the extremely slick track, Hirst used finesse as he chased after Tarlton, and though he came up a bit short, he was still pleased with the second place effort.
“We had our ups and downs with the World of Outlaws all month, and to run well with them last night, and come out tonight and finish second, we are all pleased,” Hirst said. “We are all excited for this King of the West season, and with some big things like a handful of TV races, it really is going to be a fun year.”
Friday night, Hirst was in action with the World of Outlaws for one final time before they return this Fall, and after timing in eighth fastest, Hirst picked up a heat race win, putting him in the Dash, where he finished fourth, putting him in the second row of the feature event.
Hooking up in a very entertaining battle with his teammate, Tim Kaeding, Paul McMahan, and Donny Schatz during the feature, the King of California held his own with some of the sports best, and tallied a sixth place finish.
“The two nights we ran well with the Outlaws we timed in well, and took care of business in our heat, and put ourselves in the right positions,” Hirst said. “They are the best in the world, so to run well with them is a great feeling, and hopefully we can take some of what we learned and help ourselves out all year with KWS. I have to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth for letting us run with them all month, and now hopefully we can focus on getting the Roth’s another KWS title.”
Kyle and his Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, 3H Cattle, Mobil1, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2013.
