Bergman Capitalizes on Late Red Flag to Charge to ASCS Sooner Victory

– SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 21, 2014) – One driver’s misfortune can often be the break needed for another competitor.

Seth Bergman

Seth Bergman capitalized on that situation last Friday during the ASCS Sooner Region feature at West Siloam Speedway in West Siloam Springs, Okla., where a lengthy red flag for a crash allowed Bergman’s crew to make the needed changes.

A couple of laps later Bergman powered to the lead and cruised to the victory, which was his second of the season.

“If it wasn’t for that red I don’t know if I would have got her,” Bergman said of Morgan Turpen, who led the first 16 laps. “We were good all night. We had speed with the race car. Luckily that red came out and we were able to make the right changes.”

Bergman started the night by finishing where he started – third – in his heat race, which earned him enough points to be the final driver in the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 1 to start on the pole of the 25-lap feature.

“I didn’t get the jump,” he said. “She was better than us and better in open track. I could get to her in traffic, but the way the race was working there were a lot of cautions.”

As Bergman maintained the runner-up position through the first half of the race, an open red flag allowed the crews on the track with approximately 10 laps remaining.

“We just tightened it up,” Bergman said. “I wasn’t able to rotate the middle of the corners.”

The changes worked as Bergman drove around Turpen in turns three and four soon after a restart.

Bergman nearly swept the weekend as he continued to run strong during Saturday’s ASCS Sooner and ASCS Warrior Regions event at Springfield Raceway.

After rallying from seventh to a second-place finish during his heat race, Bergman advanced into the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 7 to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.

“I got into a tangle in the first corner,” he said. “I just got in too hot and slid up the race track and made contact with a driver.”

Bergman restarted at the back and he began to search for a new line as everybody hugged the bottom.

“We had nothing to lose,” he said. “I tightened the car up as much as I could with the wing and started searching all over the race track. I was slowly picking cars off as we went. We got a couple of cautions toward the end. I think we were good enough to win again if I didn’t make a mistake on the first lap and get us so far behind.”

Bergman maneuvered to a fourth-place result, which was his fifth top five of the season. It was made even sweeter that an old crew member rejoined the team prior to the weekend.

“Michael and I work really well together and have fun,” he said. “It was refreshing. I feel like we have a good flow of things and we should be able to keep it going.”

Bergman will compete with the ASCS Lone Star Region this Friday at Lubbock Speedway in Lubbock, Texas, and this Saturday at Abilene Speedway in Abilene, Texas.
