DOUG HAMMAKER SCORES FIRST CAREER WIN IN LINCOLN 358 CHAMPIONSHIP;

Lincoln Speedway Tease 2014

From Bill Meyer

Abbottstown, PA — (July 5, 2014) — Doug Hammaker took advantage of a lucky break on the final lap to score his first career win in the 25-lap “358” sprint car championship at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Points handicapping placed Hammaker fourth for the start, and he was third behind pole sitter Troy Wagaman, Jr. and front row starter Brie Hershey at the end of the first lap. He drove around Hershey for the runner-up spot on a second-lap restart and then caught Wagaman for the lead on lap three. Though he led the rest of the way, he had to hold ninth-starting Kevin Nouse from the fourth lap on.

Nouse actually took the lead from the Delco Designs/Farnsworth Used Auto Parts #66 in heavy lapped traffic heading up the backstretch of the final lap, only to have the caution come out for Chris Arnold, who came to a stop in turn two. That gave the lead and a clear track back to Hammaker for the one-lap dash to the finish, and Hammaker hung on for a .65-second win over the Central PA Point Series leader and claim the $1,500 top prize.

Ryan Wilson came from 15th starting spot to pass Lincoln points leader Chase Dietz on the final lap and cross third, with Dietz settling for fourth and Nike Young completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Chandler Leiby, Wagaman, Jay Galloway, Hershey, and Tyler Ross, who came from the back after a 15th-lap spin on the backstretch.

Ross’s spin came on a restart which followed a collision between Dietz and Robbie Kendall, who got together while racing for third. That ended Kendall’s night. Dietz kept going and was awarded third for the restart.

Heats for the 30 358 sprinters were won by Ross, Leiby, and Hammaker, with Brian Allman winning the consolation.

Harrisonville’s Mike Wagner II won his second career Lincoln race in the 20-lap Pennsylvania Sprint Series RaceSaver 305 sprint car feature. An inversion of three put Wagner on the pole, and, despite late-race pressure from Kody Lehman and another one-lap shootout, Wagner led every lap, crossing 2.81 seconds ahead of Lehman.

Third through fifth were John Braim, Mark Watkins, and Colby Dice.

Heats for the 25 PASS RaceSaver 305 Sprints were won by Ian Detweiler, Erin Statler, and Wagner.

Marysville’s Chris Spidle started on the pole and led every lap of the 15-lap Central PA Legends feature.

Like Wagner in the PASS sprints, he started on the pole by virtue of an inversion draw of three. And like Wagner, Spidle received heavy pressure from Lucas Montgomery and tenth-starting Bob Stough and had to hold them off over a final-lap shootout.

It was Spidle’s first career Lincoln win and third career win overall.

Montgomery and Stough finished second and third, with Bill Diehl and Chad Earnst completing the top five.

Heats for the 30 Central PA Legends were won by Montgomery, Diehl, and Chris Spidle, with Rick Hartwig winning the consolation.

Next Saturday, July 12th at 7:30 PM, it will be KIDS NIGHT! The 410 sprinters will be joined by the 358 Sprints and All American Outlaws. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with heat racing getting underway at 7:30 p.m.
